Xiaomi’s return to laptops has a Surface flavor

  • 9

Xiaomi wants to have its own Surface. It is the first thing that comes to mind when you see the Xiaomi Book S 12.4 “, its convertible bet with capabilities of being both a tablet and a complete laptop with the help of its accessories. We have been able to briefly test this device or we have some first sensations that we can share.

A sober design with adequate dimensions and weight

Xiaomi Book S 12 4 Outdoor

At first glance, the Xiaomi Book S 12.4″ does not present anything that breaks schemes: it is a tablet with an optional cover that has a keyboard and an integrated trackpad (we have not had the opportunity to test the Xiaomi Pen). His weight is not exaggerated, which with its size of 12.4 inches makes it a very interesting device for those who need absolute portability. Proof of this is that it is slightly lighter than the 11-inch iPad Pro if we compare both devices with their keyboard covers on.

Xiaomi Book S Ipad Pro

The Xiaomi Book S (bottom) with the 11-inch iPad Pro (top). The Book S is thicker, although it is not a problem.

This is not the thinnest device, but the Xiaomi Book S is not too thick either. It’s something that we can carry perfectly inside a student folder or one messenger bagand it fits perfectly in a backpack.

Something that I have noticed is that it is difficult to get used to the cover: it depends on how you place it, it can be easily disassembled, so you have to gain a lot of confidence in it before you can get the hang of it. What I have quickly gotten used to is the keyboard: The keys have a reliable feel and typing text on it is very pleasant. The trackpad also defends itself well, with correct dimensions and a click Although it could be softer, it does not represent a problem either. The cover itself also offers a soft touch, although it would be necessary to see how its synthetic material degrades over time.

Keep in mind that the Xiaomi Book S 12.4 has a single USB-C port for charging and data

The Xiaomi Book S 12.4″ has a port USB-C charging and data, plus Jack headphone jack and lock and volume buttons mobile style. That means that its use with many accessories, as in the rest of convertibles and tablets, is not very comfortable and requires adapters. The best thing is that this port is mainly for charging and to connect the odd external storage unit.

User experience: a Windows 11 that offers a complete experience for general users

Xiaomi Book S12 4

What has caught my attention the most while testing the Xiaomi Book S 12.4″ is the profile of its AMOLED screen. Its colors are very vivid without being too forced, and the 2,560×1,600 pixel definition makes individual pixels invisible to the naked eye. Also, the size of the screen is just right so that it gives the impression of a laptop rather than a basic tablet screen.

But the thing that takes it the most away from the tablet format is Windows 11: This is a desktop operating system that works comfortably even if we remove the keyboard case and use it in tablet format. The controls of the Windows interface are large enough to not have problems with our fingers.

Xiaomi Book S Screen Detail

On performance, this Book S defends itself. Yes, we have an ARM chip from two years ago and with a performance that is far from the Intel Core i7 of the most powerful Surface, but for a general user who just needs basic and productivity uses it is enough. I have had no issues with waiting to open the Office, Mail or browser applications with multiple tabs open.

Obviously it will drag for semi-professional or professional uses, but this is a device that can be the basic laptop for anyone who does not have big ambitions. It remains to be seen if that is balanced with autonomysomething that due to the brevity of the tests I have not been able to verify and that therefore we will see in our complete analysis.

Xiaomi Book S 12 4 Camera

The camera of the Xiaomi Book S 12.4 will not perform as well as that of a high-end mobile, but it will be enough for the casual photographs that you can take with the tablet.

Finally, something that has also surprised me for good are the cameras. The quality of both the front and the back is more than enough to be able to make videoconferences in conditions, and even for some casual photography if we use the Book S in tablet mode at home.

It is interesting, but always within certain margins

Xiaomi Book S In Arms

This Xiaomi Book S 12.4″ is balanced between two possible functions: a large tablet or a laptop adjusted for basic functions. Personally would tip the scales more towards a laptop, especially thanks to Windows 11. Although I emphasize, it works very well with general productivity, web and office applications. A more complete and comprehensive analysis is pending to see if it can go beyond that.

We can also qualify it as a cheap alternative to Microsoft’s Surface, but beware: all its accessories (the keyboard and the Xiaomi Smart Pen) are sold separately. You have to buy at least the keyboard to be able to have the laptop experience, so the starting price of 699 euros ends up being almost 850.

the nightmare of the "surface philosophy": why the Xiaomi Book S 12.4" he comes late

In other words: the Xiaomi Book S not a laptop for those who need performance. It can be for those who need basic applications, but without too many more ambitions. And of course, it’s not intended as a gaming device. Still, there is that possible general laptop use that may be enough for a large section of general users and students.
