An American team of researchers has announced the discovery of five one-of-a-kind star systems. These newly discovered star clusters have the appearance of blue masses that denotes their youth. Their color is one of the qualities that makes them unique, along with the fact that they are isolated from other galaxies. These systems have been located in the region known as the Virgo cluster.

The discovery announced by the University of Arizona through a Press release and also published in the repository arXiv.org. These are five star systems, the first discovered of their kind. Star systems are similar to our Solar System, only they are made up of stars orbiting a common center of gravity. These objects do not meet the conditions to be considered galaxies and have the characteristic of being isolated.

What makes them unique or different?
Their isolated location is one of their unique characteristics since they are at least 300,000 light years from possible “parent galaxies” in which the stars that make up these objects could have been born.

The stars that make up these objects are young and strongly blue in color. They contain a relatively small amount of atomic hydrogenthe elemental gas from which stars first arise (with an intermediate step that is the formation of clouds of hydrogen already in a molecular state).

Michael Jones, who leads the study, explains that the systems do not have hydrogen at the atomic level, but they do have hydrogen. They know the latter since stars continue to form in these systems. In Jones’ words, “The existence of a majority of young stars and a small number of gas signals indicates that these systems must have recently lost their gas.”

One of the biggest challenges in cosmology is to find out what happened to the universe during its first moments to cause it to expand so fast.

The color of the stars.
The predominant blue color is what tell these systems. Blue stars tend to have more mass than those that give off reddish hues. As a consequence of this, blue stars burn their fuel more intensely and die earlier. The oldest, dead galaxies have a reddish color. In Jones’s words, “these blue stars are basically an oasis in the desert.”

All of these observations have given astronomers clues as to how these strange objects formed. These galaxies are rich in metals (meaning metals, explains Jones himself, as “any element heavier than helium”). This gives the team a clue as to how they formed, “from gas that was ripped out of a large galaxy, since metals form from repeated episodes of star formation, and you only get that in a large galaxy.” .

There are two ways gas can be ripped out of a galaxy. The first is due to the gravitational drag that occurs when two galaxies approach or collide, the “tidal spurt” or tidal stripping.

To explain the second, that of drag pressure, Jones resorts to an analogy: “it is as if you were throwing yourself into a swimming pool”. In the analogy, a galaxy is “slammed” against a hot clump of gas. When this phenomenon occurs, the gas of the galaxy is left behind.

An even more isolated future.
This last theory better explains their isolation since it is a more abrupt phenomenon and requires less time, which explains the distance between these objects and the closest galaxies. The team of astronomers explained that one day these star systems will disintegrate into small groups of stars and will be scattered throughout the Virgo cluster, the region of the Universe in which they are found.

The team believes that this “galactic ironclad” theory may help explain other astronomical phenomena such as why so many galaxies have a spiral shape.

These blue masses are not the only curious discoveries that have caught the attention of astronomers lately, such as bright rings of enormous size or signals that reach us with regular frequency. Add to this the mystery of fast radio bursts (FRBs) that continue to attract the attention of astronomers around the world.
