We already know how much a Spaniard saves on transportation thanks to teleworking (and at the end of the year it is a lot)

Among the various widely discussed advantages of teleworking is the saving of time and money on travel that it entails for professionals, despite the fact that part of that less expense has to be used to pay the increase in domestic consumption derived from working at home, such as light or air conditioning in the space dedicated to professional tasks.

To find out if these savings in travel really compensate despite the increase in household expenses, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has carried out a study in which it has crossed data on fuel prices, public transport and consumption from home and distance to travel. These are your results.

The greatest savings, for those who use a car

The professional who will save the most by teleworking is the one who usually needs use your car to get to the office, especially if it is gasoline and the job is more than 40 kilometers from home. In this way, the OCU estimates that an employee with these characteristics spends approximately 264 euros on fuel per month, an amount that is reduced to 212 euros if his vehicle is diesel.

Professionals who use LPG and GLC cars spend approximately 130 and 120 euros, respectively, on these long trips, those who have electric vehicles 64 euros and those who use public transport 50 euros.

With regard to short trips, those that add up to less than 25 kilometers round trip, the cost table would be as follows: gasoline car, 92 euros per month; diesel, 70 euros per month; LPG, 46 euros per month; GLC, 42 euros per month; electric, 15 euros per month; public transport, 15 euros.

Of all these data published by the OCU, public transport are the ones that cast the most doubt, since the price of train, bus and metro passes are usually fixed and quite superior in almost any city in Spain at the 15 euros mentioned.

Household expenses

With regard to household expenses, the consumer organization has calculated that in an 8-hour day of standard use of a conventional computer, approximately 1.6 kWh would be consumed, which, at current electricity prices, would mean a daily spending of about 80 cents. To this should be added the cost of air conditioning, if needed, which would be about 2.4 euros per day in summer and winter, and less than one euro in spring and autumn.

In this way, adding the maximum of both consumptions, the energy expenditure for teleworkers per month at present in Spain would be around 70 euros, so in economic terms remote work is especially advantageous for people who travel more than 40 kilometers to your office in gasoline or diesel cars.

Companies only think of telecommuting as a patch. Now it's coming back strong for inflation

After analyzing these data, the OCU concludes that the majority of Spaniards would save up to 70% of their travel expenses if they teleworked all the time, about 125 euros per month, and up to 40%, about 70 euros, with two days of remote work per week. And that without counting on other areas in which you also save by working from home, such as food.

Cisco Studio

A few months ago, the technology company Cisco also carried out a study on the savings that telecommuting entails for Spaniards. In this case, the report was prepared through surveys of people who worked remotely, and the results offered were even better than those presented by the OCU, although it must be taken into account that they also included food: savings, on average, of 100 euros a week with respect to the people who come to the office.

A large part of those surveyed (87%) considered that the elimination of displacement is the main source of savings telecommuting, especially those who had to go to the office by car, due to the increase in fuel costs. And 71% considered that spending less on food is also very important.
