WarZone’ has gotten too big. That is a problem when adding new maps

In 2017 we welcomed the era of video games that occupy 100 GB on disk, and since then we have seen how effectively the installation size of some titles has become a particular sentence for the players.

In ‘Call of Duty: Warzone’ precisely that happens, but here the problem is so serious that it is causing something surprising: its developers they prefer not to release new maps for the video game because that makes them lose players.

We better not add that brutal map

Josh Bridge, one of those responsible for the video game, conducted a recent interview with the streamer TeeP. In it, Bridge admitted that the size of Warzone is so enormous that is being an obstacle to release new maps.

It happens for example with a popular request from the players, who would like to see how the Activision team adds the original map of Verdansk next to the current map of Caldera. Bridge acknowledged that “we all want that,” but went on to acknowledge what the problem is.

“Install and reinstall sizes are fucking crazy, right? If we were to remove Caldera and say we were going to include Verdansk, it would basically be like re-downloading a file the size of Warzone. And every time we do that, we lose players“.

The comment makes sense. According to Activision, ‘Call of Duty: Warzone’ takes up 175 GB on a PC. On Xbox and PlayStation the basic download is around 90 GB, but if we add ‘Modern Warfare’ to that base game, the total installation size around 250 GB on PCs and the 150 GB on consoles.

The developers have tried to ease that burden a bit with data optimizations, but that hasn’t helped much either: the update that was released on December 7 made players on the console version they had to download about 45 GB of data.

The size of video games is becoming a problem (and it has only just begun)

Considering that the new generation consoles have storage units that are quite limited in capacity, the problem that Bridge alludes to is even more worrying. Imagine the situation for Xbox Series S gamers, who have 500GB drives that actually they only offer 364 GB to the user.

This developer explained that they are working on ways to solve that problem and have for example some “map rotation” system, and they may have something to announce to us in the future. At the moment, yes, it does not seem that it will be easy to deal with these new maps for ‘Warzone’.
