Trump created a pro-free speech social network. It hasn’t even been a week and it’s already censoring

“Let your voice be heard” is one of the mottos of Truth, Donald Trump’s new social network, which is available from this week in the App Store. An application “free of political discrimination” created as a result of Twitter deciding to eliminate the account of the former president of the United States. Paradoxically, the same social network that claims to support freedom of expression has already begun to censor and block users.

Truth’s start is having some problems. After the errors when registeringnow multiple users they are denouncing that the new social network is censoring its content when it was precisely presented as the alternative to Big Tech where one can express oneself freely.

Trump, Twitter and the great debate on the "censorship": who has the power to mark what can be said on social networks

The first account has already been blocked and didn’t even post. Truth is a social network with a style very similar to Twitter, where users have their own profile and different short messages are published in a feed. Matt Ortega, a web developer, created a user that was later deleted, when he had not even published any message, according to him. Masable.

The reason? The username was @DevinNunesCow. It is a name very similar to that of the parody Twitter account @DevinCow, which gained popularity when it was denounced by Republican Congressman Devin Nunes. Devin Nunes is also the CEO of Truth Social’s company.

“After careful review, we have decided to permanently delete your account due to violations of Truth Social’s community guidelines,” says the email Matt Ortega received upon seeing that his account had been deleted.

Freedom of expression, yes, but if it is not against them. Truth’s usage policy has turned out to be as strict or stricter than alternatives like Twitter that it wants to differentiate itself from. These include specific rules that limit speech when it comes to talking about Trump and other platform owners.

A specific note to defend the former president who does not exist on networks like Twitter towards its creators. Truth’s terms of service explain that it is not prohibited to “disparage, tarnish, or harm, in our opinion, us and/or the Site.”

The work of moderators. Truth works with a group of volunteer moderators, user reports, and bots to manage the content. These moderators may remove content that they deem “defamatory, libelous, or objectionable.”

Truth’s content blocking has also been denounced by anti-vaccine users. Steve Peters has denounced on Twitter that his post about “jailing and executing” vaccine creators was labeled “sensitive content.” A type of message that on Twitter would also have been labeled in this way. This being an example that Trump’s new social network is not very different from the rest.

Truth Guidelines

Truth blocks access to your usage policy. At the moment Truth’s usage policy cannot be read, because access has been denied. As the website explains, “this website uses a security service to protect itself from online attacks.” In other words, for security reasons, users cannot currently read the conditions of use of the platform.
