If you have a Nintendo 3DS or a Wii U, you have just over a year left to continue buying games in their digital stores. Nintendo has just announced that, as of March 2023, “it will no longer be possible to make purchases in the Nintendo eShop on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems.” In the same way, it will not be possible to download free content, such as demos.

Why? Because it is “part of the natural life cycle of any product line,” they say from the Japanese company. And what consoles does this closure affect? To the New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS, Wii U Deluxe and Wii U Basic.

Closing timeline

Although the final closure will take place in March 2023, there are two previous dates that we must take into account:

  • May 23, 2022: Since then it will not be possible to use a credit card to add funds in Nintendo eShop on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
  • August 29, 2022: Since then it will not be possible to use Nintendo eShop Cards (prepaid cards) to add funds to the Nintendo eShop on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. However, it will still be possible to redeem download codes until March 2023.

As of March 2023, no more downloading new games or making purchases. Now, from Nintendo they assure that even after the closure, “and in the foreseeable future”, it will continue to be possible re-download already purchased games and DLCsreceive software updates and play online on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

Goodbye, Wii U: the history of the console that gave Nintendo more pain than glory

And what will happen to the funds we have in the Nintendo Network ID wallet, which is the one used on Wii U and 3DS? Well, it will simply be enough to link it with the Nintendo Account wallet, which is the one used on Switch. In that way, funds can be used to purchase content on any of the three consoles. That will be possible until March 2023, but after that, this balance can only be used to purchase on Nintendo Switch.

Finally, from Nintendo they have explained that the fund cards that can currently be found in stores and that have the Wii U and 3DS logo will remain available until sold out. In any case, they state that “all Nintendo eShop Cards can be used to add funds to the Nintendo account”, ergo for the Nintendo Switch.
