This is how the chips are distributed in Android

The Android chip market is increasingly led by MediaTek. In fact, was the leading manufacturer in 2021together with a UNISOC that is growing by leaps and bounds. Counterpoint now share the data regarding the distribution of processors in price rangesshowing a tendency to opt for MediaTek in economic ranges and to respect Qualcomm’s high-end chips in more ambitious mobiles.

This trend may be about to change with the arrival of new MediaTek Dimension 8100 and 9000 although, for the moment, expensive mobiles go with Qualcomm, the least expensive with MediaTek.

A clear distinction by price ranges

A new report from CounterPoint Research shows us the curious fact about the distribution of mobile processors by price range, referring to the global android market, not counting Apple’s A’s. The data points to a Qualcomm focused on its 700 and 800 ranges to boost revenue, as high end processors are more profitable.

Qualcomm thus dominated the range above $499, with a total share of 65% in 2021, up from 53% in 2020. In fact, the only competitor they have in the higher ranges is Samsung, listing its Exynos in various marketsdespite having variants with Qualcomm of its high range.

MediaTek is eating up the market at a steady pace. If their high-end proposals penetrate the market, they will be protagonists in all ranges

Everyone wants their own ARM chip: Google, Apple, Huawei and Samsung already manufacture their SoCs, but there are many more in the pipeline

Despite the good data in this segment, the protagonist is again MediaTek. The Chinese manufacturer leads in the price ranges below $299, with a total market share of 52%. Much of the growth here comes in the entry-level range with LTE chips, where MediaTek has a 62% presence.

2022 could be a crucial year for MediaTek, thanks to its Dimensity 8100 and 9000. Benchmarks point to more energy efficient processors than Qualcomm, with a fairly similar performance. If the Chinese manufacturer manages to push these two platforms into the high-end (in fact, there is already a variant of the OPPO Find X5 Pro with MediaTek), the tables could turn for Qualcomm.
