They hack the Movistar Spain Twitter account and retweet messages about cryptocurrencies

The security of the Twitter account of Movistar Spain, the main telecommunications company in the country, would have been compromised. At the time of writing this article, the user @movistar_eswith the blue authenticity verification badge, has changed its name and the profile and cover photos have disappeared.

Additionally, the account’s last apparently legitimate visible post dates back to Wednesday, September 14. Subsequently, several retweets of cryptocurrency contentall related to Ethereum, precisely on the same day that the network has completed an important event known as ‘The Merge’.

Problems with the Twitter account of Movistar Spain

In the account profile there are retweets from the official Coinbase account, from another account that claims to be related to the Ethereum community, from Vitalik Buterin, one of the Ethereum founders, among others. Faced with this type of scenario, it is important that, as users, be very careful to avoid possible scams.

Although we do not know the details of what happened, and We have written to Movistar Spain to incorporate their statements into this article, everything seems to indicate that someone without authorization has taken control of the account, which may be a vector for executing some type of scam with cryptocurrencies or of another nature.

It must be remembered that this would not be the first time that the security of a high-profile twitter account is compromised. In 2019, the account of the CEO of the social network at the time, Jack Dorsey, began to publish racist messages. In 2020, it was the turn of Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Jeff Bezos, among others.

At the time of the 2020 hack, the aforementioned accounts promised to duplicate cryptocurrency transfers sent to a certain address. Indeed, it was a maneuver by which the scammers wanted to use the reach of public figures to steal money from those who fell into the trap.
