We knew that sooner or later this time would come, the Mountain View company he had been warning us for months, even with in-app messages. Since yesterday, Android Auto on mobile screen is no longer available, so we are invited to use the driving mode of Google Assistant. The problem? It is a substitute that is not available to everyone.

What explain Our colleagues from Xataka Android, the decision to bet everything on the new driving mode integrated into Google Maps mainly harms those who have old mobile phones or live in regions where the Android Auto substitute on the phone screen is not available. Let’s see what this is all about and what are the new requirements to use it.

Goodbye to Android Auto on the car screen

If you are one of the users who was still using Android Auto from your mobile, when you open the application you will find a message indicating that it is no longer available. In case you have a compatible car, when you connect the mobile, you can continue using Android Auto. Everything will continue to work as before, only from the vehicle screen.

What if you don’t have a Android Auto compatible car? This is where the new Google Assistant driving mode comes into play, a substitute that gives us a basic driving experience on the screen of our phone. To use it, you will have to start navigation to a destination in Google Maps, that is, you will not have a dedicated application with a shortcut icon.

Android Auto 2

But there is a problem with this new driving mode. As we mentioned above, it is not available to all users. While Android Auto works from Android 6.0 onwards, Google Assistant driving mode needs Android 9.0 or higher. And, as if that were not enough, it requires that the mobile has a minimum of 4 GB of RAM.

We also have limitations by regions. Google has established that the replacement for Android Auto for the mobile screen is only available in a few countries: Germany, Australia, Canada, Spain, the United States, France, India, Italy, Mexico or the United Kingdom. This, added to the new requirements, means that many users will be left without alternatives.

The car software was in chaos. Until Android Automotive arrived

In parallel, Google is working on a more ambitious bet. This is called Android Automotive, and it is a complete and independent operating system that does not depend on the mobile phone, but it runs directly from the car. We will still have to wait for it to become popular, but for now it is being implemented in some cars, including the new Polestar 2.
