The wittiest time loops are on Prime Video, in a comedy brimming with great ideas

A few months ago in which time loops seemed to flood genre cinema. The shadow of ‘Trapped in Time’ had become a convention decades after the premiere of Bill Murray’s film, but it didn’t matter too much because such extraordinary films as ‘Palm Springs’ or this ‘The map of the perfect little things’ produced by Amazon and that you can see in prime Video.

It is a miniature disguised as a juvenile romantic comedy that, however, harbors an honesty and devotion to the genre that make it a must-see for any fanteenager or not. The person in charge is the screenwriter Lev Grossman, also author of the story on which the film is inspired, and author of the trilogy of books young adult on which the series ‘The Magicians’ is based.

‘The map of the perfect little things’ tells us the story of two 17-year-olds (Kyle Allen and Kathryn Newton, two great actors despite not being almost known) who meet and already know how loops work. Together they will wander between clone days wondering why everything works this way, and finding ways to make the same day that repeats itself attractive. They are not obsessed with breaking the loop, and that has a plot explanation, and it also serves to give the film a very particular tone.

Our protagonists understand how this nonsense works in the space-time that they have lived through, and that gives the film the air of a fan film that allows we don’t have to go through the cumbersome process of characters realizing they’re in a loop and else. For that alone, for its excellent sense of humor and its abundant ideas that dynamit the conventions of time travel, the film is well worth a ride (on a loop).
