The US prepares to win the electronic war with the EC-37B, a new plane to disrupt communications

  • 21

Warfare is not only waged on the battlefield with conventional military equipment, sophisticated instruments that target the enemy’s electromagnetic spectrum are also used in what is known as “electronic warfare.” The objective of this is intercept or disrupt communications, radars, navigation systems and remote control of finished objectives. Such an attack can be a low blow in a war scenario.

The United States knows this well. The country, which boasts “the world’s most advanced combat aircraft,” the Lockheed Martin F-35; “the largest aircraft carrier in the world”, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), could not be less in electronic warfare, so it has been presented before a flight to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson , arizona , the EC-37B Call, an aircraft that will replace the old EC-130H Call.

Prepared for more sophisticated electronic attacks

The EC-37B is not yet ready to join the US Air Force, but it is only now that we are seeing a tangible result of the country’s plans to improve its electronic warfare capabilities. Is about a highly modified Gulfstream G550 by contractors L3Harris and BAE Systems to perform defense tasks. Although there are not many details about the internal components, the modification of the fuselage is evident, which no longer resembles that of the conventional model.

The systems incorporated in the EC-37B will allow disrupt adversary communications, which would leave you isolated and without the ability to share important information. In addition, they will be useful for other types of electronic attacks, such as intelligence tasks that seek intercept communications to collect and analyze data. The latter could reveal future moves on the battlefield, even revealing the precise location of certain targets.

Electronic Warfare Plane United States 2

It should be noted that electronic warfare is not a new concept and, in the case of the United States, it has been in development for more than 40 years with the EC-130H Call, a Hercules C-130 modified for the aforementioned purposes. This type of aircraft, however, entered service in 1982 and some of its characteristics were updated, but to continue advancing it was necessary to use a new platform. Thus, the Gulfstream G550 came into play under the name EC-37B.

The EC-37B will be able to fly much higher than the old Hercules, an advantage that will translate into allowing broader electronic attacks from greater distance, reducing the risk of an armed response. Also, according to BAE Systems, the plane will be faster than its predecessor and have extensive upgrade possibilities. For now, it remains to wait for the delivery schedule, which should start sometime in 2023 with the commissioning of the first five aircraft out of a total of 14.
