the return of Easter

Although no one expected it, the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has just announced that the Government intends to remove the mask indoors on April 19. A decision that would enter into force on the 20th. That day, the Council of Ministers would approve the end of the last non-pharmacological measure that remains in force in Spain after two years of the pandemic.

Where can you go without a mask? From what we know so far and pending final approval, around Easter, the use of masks indoors will only be mandatory in public transport, health centers (such as hospitals or health centers) and other shared spaces. with vulnerable people (such as nursing homes).

As explained by the Minister, the decree will also contemplate the possibility of proposing specific restrictions. For example, in offices and other workplaces, companies will be able to regulate their use. In the same way, there will be mechanisms so that museums or hospitality centers can require the mask if they deem it appropriate. In addition, the withdrawal of the obligation will be accompanied by a list of places where the Ministry “recommends” to continue using it.

Will it be withdrawn suddenly or gradually? Months ago, the Spanish Association of Pediatrics asked to delete the school mask as a way to start the “de-escalation” progressively. According to media such as The Spanishsome communities have asked to advance this measure in schools, but the government’s plan seems to be to remove the mask suddenly after Easter.

What is the next step? The minister has just raised the proposal in the Interterritorial Health Council and, as it is not an issue that was on the agenda, the Ministry does not need the support of the autonomies. Be that as it may, the Government has the power to remove the mask when it deems convenient. Therefore, except for surprise, on April 20 the indoor mask will no longer be in force.

Spain, one of the last in Europe to remove the mask. Although communities like Euskadi or Asturias they believe that the decision is hasty, the truth is that Spain thus joins an international trend. One of the last European countries to join the elimination of the mask indoors was France, which stopped using it in spaces that require the (vaccination passport to enter). The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Poland and Finland have eliminated it; Greece also joined a few days ago. Outside the continent, California, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington DC and New York have also been doing so in recent weeks.
