The ‘Resident Evil’ series arrives on Netflix with a trailer that preserves all the ferocity of the games

It has been made to beg, but we already have the first images of the new Netflix series inspired by ‘Resident Evil’. It is still early to know details about the plot, beyond that we will have Raccoon City, we will have Umbrella facilities and we will have the end of the world in 2036, 14 years after the spread of the virus. In that sense, the series seems to have some visual and thematic continuity with the Paul WS Anderson filmsmore than with Capcom games.

For the rest, the trailer gives everything expected in a ‘Resident Evil’ series: zombies, Umbrella as an evil corporation and mutant monsters (a Licker seems to be distinguished in a fleeting shot). The protagonist of this series whose premiere will be on July 14 is Jade Wesker, daughter of one of the absolute villains of the franchise, Albert Wesker, whom in the series (apart from a notable change in his appearance) we will see something more humanized.

Jade’s search for her missing sister is definitely a plot line that stands apart from the games and movies, and for now in this trailer we leave aside the law enforcement agencies represented by STARS or the Raccoon City police, although it is not ruled out that the action forks into different more recognizable characters for fans of the saga, and that this advance is only a first approximation. Of course, it is a different perspective than usual.

'Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City' is a festival of monsters and gore with all the shamelessness of the best Series B

What seems more or less certain is that Netflix has tried to make a series accessible to all audiences, and not just for fans of ‘Resident Evil’. Possibly leaving behind, then, the delightful serial structure of Anderson’s films, the convoluted plot line of the original games, and the wink-fest of the underrated ‘Resident Evil. Welcome to Raccoon City’. Will Netflix be able to satisfy long-time fans?
