The war in Ukraine is about to fully affect the International Space Station (ISS). The director of the Russian agency, Roscosmoshas announced today through the networks that Moscow will end cooperation with Western countries until the sanctions are lifted which, he lamented, are affecting Russian companies and harming the country’s economy and population.

“The restoration of normal relations between the partners of the ISS and other collaborative projects is possible only with the complete and unconditional removal of illegal sanctions”, claimed the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, after criticizing the refusal of his counterparts from the other agencies involved in the ISS to lift sanctions on Russian companies in the industry. Rogozin I had given them until the end of March to lift the sations.

In the opinion of the Russian leader, the measures activated over the last few weeks by several countries, such as the US or the European Union, seek to “kill the Russian economy and plunge our people into despair and hunger” to “bring them to their knees” to the nation. And he warns, “They won’t make it.”

The space drift of war

At the moment it is unknown how and when Russia plans to suspend its cooperation in the station, in which it collaborates with the US, Canada, the EU and Japan; but Rogozin has advanced that it will not take long to transfer it to the country’s authorities. The ISS is not the first space “victim” of the Ukrainian war. The European Space Agency (ESA) has also decided to suspend the mission of the Exomars rover, which was due to leave in September and was promoted hand in hand with Russia.

At the end of February, days after the start of the invasion, Roscosmos also announced the stoppage of Soyuz rocket launches from Kourou, a service that had planned to use Arianespace in April; and the withdrawal of its personnel from French Guiana. already then moscow threatened to leave the International Space Station. Shortly after, at the beginning of March and through an official video, its authorities they hinted again that could leave the ISS

Since then, however, Western countries have activated a battery of measures motivated by the war in Ukraine and seeking to limit the Kremlin’s ability to finance the war. Among other actions, the access of the federation’s banks to the SWIFT system, which facilitates international operations, has been restricted, and measures have been announced to limit energy dependence From Russia, restricted imports and penalized the country’s oligarchs.

“We will soon present to the country’s leadership the specific proposals of Roscosmos regarding the deadlines for the cessation of cooperation within the framework of the ISS with the space entities of the US, Canada, the EU and Japan”, noted in the director of the agency on Telegram.

Rogozin’s announcement comes just days after the landing in Kazakhstan this week of an American and two Russian astronauts from the ISS.
