The OSOM OV1 will be the high-end mobile that Essential could never do. And there will be surprises even in your USB-C cable

In 2017 the Essential Phone arrived, a mobile that wanted to stand up to the big ones and that was one of the first to bet on mobiles with almost no frames. Its peculiar notch in the form of a “drop” for the front camera It ended up becoming a trend, but the company closed after the failure of a smartphone whose cameras did not measure up.

Now former Essential engineers have created a new company called OSOM, and they have already prepared their new terminal, the OSOM OV1. This smartphone looks like a worthy heir to the first Essential model, and it seems that they want to correct the mistake they made with the photographic experience. There is one more surprise, by the way: pay attention to your charging cable.

Correcting the mistakes of the past

The OSOM OV1 proposal is to compete with the flagships of Apple, Google or Samsung, and to achieve this they will have a chassis made of steel and titanium plus a ceramic back.

The cell phone, yes. will be “noticeably larger” than the Essential Phone, which raised a diagonal of 5.7 inches. It will be available in black and white, but its creators say that “surprises will come” in the colors in which it will arrive.

On the front, the Corning Victus glass will protect the screen, and inside we will have a Qualcomm processor, which may not be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 but perhaps even his successor or a hypothetical Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+, if it appears.

Among the integrated wireless technologies will be the Ultra WideBand that is used for high-precision location or to turn the mobile into a curious key for our car. It will have a Dual SIM slotbut the important thing probably comes with the cameras.

OSOM’s proposal is to have a “truly high-end camera experience”. The rear module will have two 48 and 12 Mpixel sensors and it will raise a small protrusion in the rear, something that they avoided in the Essential and that was possibly one of the reasons that it imposed limitations in the photographic section.

A USB-C cable with an ace up its sleeve

It will be interesting to see how it behaves in general terms, but OSOM has another curious surprise: its USB-A to USB-C charging cable stands out because it will have a small switch that will allow you to select between connection for charging and connection for data.

The idea will allow, for example, to be calmer when we connect the mobile to charge it in public placessomething that can end giving us a scare. The device will support fast charging, but the charger will not be included in the box.

How to charge mobile phone to maximize battery life

The disadvantage? That this mechanical disconnection limits the transfer speed to those of the USB 2 ports, about 60MB/sbut we can take advantage of the full capacity of the USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 1, 625 MB/s) when we use another normal cable, for example at home.

OSOM was expected to present the OV1 during the Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona, but finally has been postponed that ad. What we do know is that will be available in the fourth quarter of 2022a good time in view of the Christmas dates… if the SoC and its price/performance manage to be competitive with those rivals it wants to stand up to.
