The new batch of high-end smartphones is encouraged: the OPPO Find X5 and X5 Prothe new flagships of a manufacturer that has been gaining ground over the years and that this year wants to compete again with the best on the market.

To achieve this, they have a characteristic design due to the shape of their camera module, but also with a unique combination of photographic sensors that are enhanced with the debut of OPPO’s own chip, the MariSilicon Xan NPU dedicated to making the images of this mobile better than ever.

A design marked by the fusion of the camera module in the chassis

The front parts of the mobiles make it difficult to differentiate one from the other, and the manufacturers know well that the rear parts are the ones that give option to mark differences with competitors.

This is where the designs are trying to go in new directions, and of course in the OPPO Find X5 Pro they have made an effort with a back in which the camera module, traditionally “glued” to the casing, ends up merging with a smooth curve which makes us forget a little about the well-known “hump” that these modules impose.

OPPO Find X5 Pro and Find X5, first impressions: the high-end assault brandishing Hasselblad's photography expertise

The Find X5 is less ambitious in this section, yes, and its camera module is aligned with one’s rear and barely protrudes a millimeter. If you’re not a fan of those bulky camera modules on other phones, that option is certainly eye-catching.

That camera module – they had already done something similar with the Find X3 Pro – feels much more part of the Find X5 Pro thanks to that curious construction with a bump which is joined by slightly sunken sensors to improve protection.

The camera module in the OPPO Find X5 is almost at the level of the case, and is not “fused” with a protrusion like its older brother.

At OPPO they have also wanted to differentiate the base model, the OPPO Find X5, from its older brother, the OPPO Find X5 Pro in terms of screen dimensions. The first one is slightly smaller (6.5 inches against 6.7), and here perhaps the manufacturer has missed an opportunity to bet on a somewhat more compact base model.

What he has done is use different materials according to the model. The Find X5 has a chassis that combines glass and metal, while the Find X5 Pro is made of ceramic and metal.

A Pro very Pro, sacrifices in the X5 Find

The specification sheet of both models makes it clear that the truly ambitious model for this year is the Find X5 Pro. In it we find Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, while curiously in the Find X5 we have the Snapdragon 888 from last year.

That already marks a first difference that continues with the screens. LPTO technology is used in the Pro model, which gives more play in terms of its variable refresh rates that can range between 1 and 120 Hz. In the Find X5 there is also 120 Hz support, but with LPTS technology (variable from 10 to 120 Hz) and especially lower resolution.

OPPO Find X5 Pro comparison: we pit it against the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, Xiaomi 12 Pro and the best high-end of the year

There are also trade-offs in RAM (12GB in the Pro model, 8 in the standard model) and protection against water and dust (IP68 in the Pro, IP54 in the standard), but probably the other most important difference is in the camera module, which change the main lenswith worse opening and worse optical stabilization in the Find X5.

Yes indeed: both feature the MarliSilicon X NPU and also with generous batteries both in capacity and in fast charging: up to 80 watts in wired charging and up to 30 watts in wireless charging.

The cameras are not alone: the MariSilicon X NPU arrives

Last year we knew that OPPO was working on its own chips, but these were not full SoCs, but coprocessors specifically geared towards help in the photographic section.

In December 2021 we finally learned the result of that effort: The OPPO MariSilicon X arrivedsome NPUs manufactured with 6nm photolithography and that gave access to interesting options in image post-processing and in capturing both photos and (especially) video.

The cameras of the OPPO Find X5 Pro and Find X5, explained: their ambition will shake the foundations of the high-end

This NPU is responsible for the aforementioned processing of the photographs and allows, for example, to improve the HDR treatment, in addition to shoot 4K video at night at 30 FPS without raising ISO sensitivity. This coprocessor is also responsible for managing the color adjustment algorithms, and has a calculation capacity of 18 TOPS.

The OPPO Find X5 and X5 Pro cameras have filters specially developed by Hasselblad. One of them, the XPan filter, emulates the aesthetic finish of the iconic camera to Hasselblad XPan panoramic photography.

Collaboration with this renowned manufacturer has been limited to software —they have not participated in fine-tuning the photographic hardware— but, for example, the using Hasselblad’s HNCS technology for adjusting the colorimetry.

The commitment to sensors is almost identical in both, but the dual use of the Sony IMX766 sensor in the OPPO X5 Pro stands out. That remarkable optics of the Pro model makes the difference for its RGBW matrix that allows to collect more light —especially in low light— and thus achieve better results in both photo and video modes.

There’s also better stabilization on the Find X5 Pro’s main sensor, which is five-axis versus two-axis of the Find X5’s sensor, which will also help better avoid shaky photos and videos.

In fact one of the interesting features of these cameras in combination with the MariSilicon X NPU is their ability to record “ultra night 4K” video which according to the manufacturer improves the perceived resolution of night video by four times, with less grain and superior color reproduction.

That NPU also helps in the post-processing of the front camera, which has a striking 32 MP sensor and that according to OPPO it offers an improved dynamic range and better textures for your selfies.

These mobiles also have the possibility of activating the ‘always on’ mode (always on) of the camera to capture gestures although that may also pose concerns about our privacy.
