The metaverse was to attend the presentation of a tablet in ‘Minecraft’ with a personalized avatar

The metaverse, that abstract concept that ever since Facebook Meta said she was going to bet the death on him we kept listening. It’s the future they say. A distant future, but the future after all. And how could it be otherwise, we have already begun to see initiatives in this field, such as Lightship (Niantic), Decentraland (virtual plots) and we have even seen Nike showing some interest in this virtual universe.

The metaverse, because of how Zuckerberg sold it to us, was very ‘Ready Player One’: virtual rooms, avatars, meetings in virtual reality (but not like now, but much more realistic), games, etc. That is what, apparently, will be in the future, but what we have been able to experience so far has been, neither more nor less, that the virtual presentation of a tablet in ‘Minecraft’.

I met the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro in ‘Minecraft’

This week we have published in Xataka that the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro arrived in Spain. The tablet was already presented, but it was not until this week that we had the presentation to find out about its launch in our borders. What caught us a bit by surprise is that it was neither in person nor in a Zoom video call, but on a ‘Minecraft’ server (and a call on Discord for the audio).

Before the event I had to send some information, such as my hair color, my eyes, if I had glasses, a beard, etc. They are not the typical data that they usually ask you for before attending an event, far from it. And why that data? Because they created a personalized avatar for me, with my suit, my beard, my glasses and my eye color. My metapersona, what Zuckerberg would say.

My “metayo”.

Upon entering the server we had a huge entrance with the name of the tablet, some stairs and a series of colored paths that led to different rooms. He wasn’t alone, of course. There were more colleagues swarming around, as you will see in the screenshots that accompany this article.

We had a while to walk around and discover the rooms, which were really decorative. After a few minutes, and when the Discord conference started, someone wrote in the chat that we had to follow the orange path. This led to a kind of theater in which we all stared at the stage, where nothing really happened. There was no “presentation” as such, or so it seemed to me.

In the living room there was a QR code on the whole wall (blessed patience to build this) that led to the technical sheet of the tablet on the Lenovo website, something that, still rudimentary, seemed quite original to me. At the end of the presentation, they told us that we had the opportunity to take a walk and get to know the interior better because, mind you, the map was not a building or anything, but rather it was a recreation/interpretation of the interior of the tablet.

This capture, for example, is the processor room. The one you have below was taken flying over the map and, indeed, it shows what the screen of the tablet would be. And the entrance? Exactly: was the USB type C port. That is, we all enter the presentation through the USB port. There was also a jump challenge to get to the selfie zone.

Far from being what Zuckerberg sold us when they announced the change of name and strategy, it is a proposal, at least, original or at least different. And it’s not the first time I’ve seen something like this, because when the HP Reverb G2 was announced, the presentation was in AltSpace and in virtual reality, with my avatar and everything.

Best of all, in the metaverse it’s okay if seats bother you or if someone taller than you sits in front of you, since you can destroy them without any problem (Lenovo, sorry for breaking the stage).
