The largest cyberattack in Ukraine to date leaves much of the country without internet for hours

Ukrtelecom, Ukraine’s national operator, has suffered the largest cyber attack detected to date since the start of the war. as described Netblocksan organization dedicated to monitoring internet access, the cyberattack has caused a very serious cut in access.

For weeks, the large Ukrainian carrier has been operating at around 80% capacity, due to various attacks and the damage to its infrastructure from the Russian invasion. However, the cyber attack occurred now has reduced connectivity to 13% of pre-war levels.

Internet access in the spotlight

As explained by the BBC, the rest of the internet operators in the country have not suffered any problems. the cyberattack has directly targeted Ukrtelecom, the country’s largest operatorwhich has confirmed the damage to its infrastructure and services.

“In order to protect critical network infrastructure and not disrupt services to the Armed Forces, other military, and critical infrastructure users, we were forced to temporarily restrict Internet access to most private users and business customers,” has explained Yurii Shchyhol, from the Ukrainian government.

From Netblocks they explain that the technicians observed problems in the connection throughout the day, indicating that it was not a problem related to cables or interconnectionsbut directly with the core infrastructure. The operator has been owned by Ukraine since 2010 and its headquarters are in kyiv.

15 hours later, the service is slowly being restored to previous levels of about 80% coverage. This is the first major cyberattack that has affected the whole of Ukraine, where the national operator has users.
