The Ingenuity helicopter makes its 20th flight over Mars and makes something extraordinary normal

NASA anticipated that the Ingenuity helicopter would make three flights to Mars. take 20. The last of them occurred last Friday and once again demonstrated the surprising longevity of a vehicle that continues to amaze us.

It could well be said that this has been “another day at the office” for Ingenuitywhich ten months after rising for the first time continues to fulfill its mission as a unique companion to the Perseverance rover.

There were no records in this case, but Ingenuity made a fairly long flight of 391 meters at 4.4 meters per second and in which it reached a maximum height of 10 meters.

the longest flight was the ninth, 625 meterswhile the maximum speed achieved was 5 m/s and the maximum height, 12 meters (it has been achieved in several flights).

"Only with proprietary software it would have been impossible”: this is how Open Source has helped in the quest of Ingenuity on Mars

At NASA they have not included an entry on their blog at the moment —although they have in your flight log— as usual after these flights, but they did communicate the news On twitterwhere they indicated that Ingenuity had approached the location where it landed the Perseverance rover mission. Your location is registering constantly.

That rover is also on its (almost) solitary mission of exploration and sample collection, and early will direct their steps to the north, to an ancient delta of a Martian river at jezero crater which could lead to new discoveries. You can check your position at all times on this interactive map. Ingenuity, by the way, will take “a short cut” to go to the same location.

Ingenuity’s flights already seem normal, but achieving something like this on a planet that is (right now, it tells us Wolfram Alpha) 300 million kilometers away it’s not easy.

On flight 19 for example they had to wait to the passage of a dust storm that caused a significant drop in air density and also of the efficiency of the solar panels.

Even so, that storm dirty your camera, something that could complicate things and confuse the navigation sensors, but NASA had already foreseen something like this and its software is capable of ignore certain regions of images that are captured. This twentieth flight has once again shown that the prodigious Ingenuity does not stop giving us good news.
