'The House of the Dragon' is the premiere with the highest audience in the history of HBO: the nostalgia for 'Game of Thrones' already works

The question was in the air: will ‘The House of the Dragon’, the first spin-off of ‘Game of Thrones’ in a sequel format, be able to leave behind the general feeling of disappointment left by the eighth season of the series? When Casey Bloys, head of content for HBO Max, told The Hollywood Reporter that “Twitter isn’t real life” and that there really weren’t that many people upset with the end of the original series or unwilling to give the franchise a chance, he seemed to have a point. ‘The House of the Dragon’ has swept its premiere.

We are before HBO’s best series premiere of all time: 9.986 million viewers through its television premiere and those viewed on HBO Max on Sunday night, that is, before its international premiere (it arrived in countries like Spain, as usual, one day late). It can be compared to the debut of ‘Game of Thrones’ with 4.152 million viewers in 2011, although obviously we are talking about a very different situation there, without streaming catapulting the figures.

It is not, however, the best season debut of the series: ‘Game of Thrones’, made 17.91 million viewers at the start of its eighth season, but again, we are facing a different situation. The audience for the original ‘Game of Thrones’ was built and increased little by little, and in the eighth season it was at the zenith of its success.

According to HBO, these numbers are just the beginning: those more than nine million viewers represent “between 20% and 40% of the total audience of the series”, extrapolating what happens with other productions. The total figures will be much higher, which makes perfect sense after seeing awesome tweets like thiswith part of a block of flats watching this first chapter of the new series in unison during its live broadcast
