The Google Maps app for WearOS will receive a useful function at the end of the year: being able to use it offline

One of the benefits of watches with WearOS is that they have access to the Google ecosystem, which includes the Google Play Store and its huge catalog of apps and Google Maps, which needs no introduction. Well, this app has also had its share of prominence during Samsung’s Unpacked, as Google has come on stage to announce an interesting novelty: offline mode.

To date, on watches with WearOS we can use Google Maps to receive directions in real time, but this function requires that we have the watch connected to the mobile at all times. This is something that is not always possible and Google wants to solve it in a future version.

There is no Internet? Anyway, Google Maps works

During the presentation of the Galaxy Watch5, Björn Kilbur, GM & Senior Director of WearOS at Google, took the opportunity to comment on the news coming soon to WearOS. The most striking is the offline mode of Google Maps. According to Kilbur:

“By the end of the year, we’re going to make it so you don’t need your phone to use Google Maps on your watch. That way, if you get lost during a race, you’ll be able to get home.”

How exactly will it work? it is not known. There are several options, and one of them is that you can download the maps on the watch itself as it is already possible in the mobile app, but it is not known at the moment. Regardless, it’s a handy feature that wouldn’t be uncommon to see first on Samsung’s new smartwatches, which come with WearOS 3.5, by the way.
