the franchise will take a break for the first time in almost 20 years, according to Bloomberg

There are events that are repeated every year and in the world of video games one of them is the launch of the ‘Call of Duty’ shift. Activision-Blizzard, which already has one foot in Microsoft, has been since 2005 without missing a single year to its appointment with the fans. Almost 20 years, neither more nor less. But that, however, is about to changejust like Jason Schreier has advanced in Bloomberg.

According to Schreier, Activision has delayed the delivery of ‘Call of Duty’ scheduled for 2023 to 2024. The game, which was going to be developed by Treyarch, will take longer to arrive. The reason, apparently, is related to the bad performance of the last installmentCall of Duty: Vanguard‘, and not with the purchase by Microsoft.

A historic event for ‘Call of Duty’

According to Schreier’s unnamed sources, the poor performance of ‘Call of Duty: Vanguard’ has led “some executives to believe that they are introducing new versions too quickly”. This is one of the criticisms that the franchise usually receives with each release: the game is new, but innovations are rather scarce. To that, obviously, we must add the success of ‘Warzone’, his free battle royale.

So, this year we will have the sequel to ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’ (released in 2019), which we currently know as ‘COD 2022’ and that we know is being developed by Infinity Ward. We will also have a new ‘Call of Duty: Warzone’ experience. Both are being developed from scratch and with a new engine.

What steps does Microsoft have ahead for the regulator to approve the largest operation in video game history

It will be with these two titles that Activision will try to make up for the lack of an annual installment in 2023. Instead of releasing another ‘Call of Duty’, the company, Schreier slides, will release a new free game and additional content for ‘COD 2022’ and that new ‘Warzone’ experience yet to be defined.

COD

And is that ‘Call of Duty: Vanguard’ has not worked as planned. The game, which takes us back to the Second World War, has not managed to overcome ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War’ in sales and their evaluations are not exactly positive, with a 3.6 on Metacritic by users. That, however, has not prevented it from being the best-selling game in the United States in 2021.
