The DGT allows you to legally circulate at 150 km/h without being an emergency vehicle. The secret: a sign

  • 4

There is only one type of driver who can break speed limits without risking being fined. And we are not talking about Civil Guard agents, police officers or ambulance drivers. Beyond emergency vehicle drivers, there is also one curious exception.

Although the DGT actively fights against speeding, such as the reduction of speed on all secondary roads to 90 km/h or the impossibility of exceeding this limit by 20 km/h to overtake, it contemplates an exception that allows driving up to 150 km/h on motorways and motorways: the V12 signal.

Is signal V12 warning is specific to vehicles undergoing special tests or research tests. As specified in the General Vehicle Regulations in its article 47this plate must be installed twice in those cars that are performing special tests.

Up to 150 km/h on open road

Due to the climate, Spain is one of the countries where vehicle tests are common, especially in summer, when vehicles are put to the test in harsh heat conditions. For this reason, the DGT contemplates the possibility of an express regulation for these test vehicles.

As we said, all the limits are included in article 47 of the General Vehicle Regulations. It states that for a vehicle to have the guarantees set forth in said regulations, its use must be approved by the DGT, who has to approve the previously submitted documentation. In addition, the body authorizes one by one the specific people who can get behind the wheel of these experimental vehicles.

No V-16 light from the DGT that you buy now is going to free you from a 200 euro fine when they are mandatory

Regarding the limitations of these tests, the regulations specify that a vehicle may exceed the permitted speed limits up to a maximum of 30 km/h, but this exception must always be approved with a minimum of 72 hours. Therefore, this limit of 150 km/h may be exceeded on highways and motorways provided that the road has previously been closed to general traffic.

What is specified is that “said tests cannot be carried out on urban roadscrossings or sections where there is specific signage that limits speed”. It is also clarified that, at the request of those responsible for the tests, the road may be specifically signposted to alert other drivers that they are working with a test vehicle.

Keep in mind that driving at 150 km/h without any type of special permit is an infraction that entails 100 euro fine but it does not deduct DGT points from your driving license. Precisely, just this is the limit, because overcoming this barrier does collect a penalty on our balance of points.
