Another great technology company has opted for Spain to open one of its data centers. After Amazon, IBM, microsoft or GoogleMeta has decided that it will install its only CPD in southern Europe to date in Talavera de la Reina, in Castilla-La Mancha, As reported by the government of the autonomous community in a note. With this infrastructure, Spain adds arguments as a technological hub of the European noon.

The project. According to official data, Meta wants to build a Data Center Campus of around 300,000 square meters, for which it will invest more than 1,000 million euros. If the dimensions are finally those, it would become the largest CPD in Meta in Europe. Castilla-La Mancha estimates that these facilities will create more than 1,000 jobs, of which 250 would be highly qualified.

However, the opening is not yet guaranteed, since, despite the fact that Meta has chosen Talavera to locate its data center, company sources they have explained to eldiario.es that the bureaucratic process is very long and it cannot be 100% guaranteed that the project will be carried out. Although they emphasize that the location has been studied for several years and that Mark Zuckerberg’s commitment to the Castilian-Manchega city is firm.

The only one in southern Europe. Currently, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, among others, has three data centers in Europe, but all of them are located in the north of the Old Continent: Sweden, Denmark and Ireland. The Meta facilities in Talavera, if opened, will be the company’s first for the entire region bathed by the Mediterranean.

A growing attraction. Thus, this new project shows that our country has positioned itself as a very attractive destination to locate data centers. As we already explained in Xataka, in 2021 the sector’s forecasts predicted that the increase in this market in Spain would be 62% in the coming years, and placed Spain as one of the countries in which this type of facility was going to grow the most. Worldwide.

The antecedents, of course, accompanied the optimism of these forecasts. Since Amazon also chose Spain to open three data centers in southern Europe in 2019, a decision that its managers attributed to the fact that our country met the optimal conditions in terms of available space, electrical capacity, geographical location and administrative agility (at less in this particular case), as explained to Xataka.

Shortly after Amazon’s announcement, in 2020, it was Microsoft and Google that reported that they planned to open CPDs in our country, and those projects to build data centers in Spain were joined by those of IBM and Oracle in 2021.
