Distractions have been, for years, the main cause of accident In our country. Speed is, without a doubt, an aggravating circumstance in most cases, but it has been a long time since lack of concentration in what happens on the road became the biggest problem of road safety. And mobile phones are very much to blame.

In fact, the use of the mobile phone is registered as the most common distraction. It is not surprising that manufacturers have their own “do not disturb” modes to activate when we sit behind the wheel or that the use of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay has become widespread.

In order to combat its use, the latest reform of the Law on Traffic, Circulation of Motor Vehicles and Road Safety includes important changes in the penalties for using the mobile phone. Thus, if an agent (or a camera) detects that the driver is carrying it in his hand (he does not need to be actively using it), the fine is 200 euros and six points Except on the driver’s license.

If, on the other hand, the driver is caught using it on an approved support, the fine will also be 200 euros, but three points will be deducted from the driving license. We must bear in mind that it is essential that the support for the mobile phone does not interfere with our vision, since the penalty in this case is 100 euros.

This is how the cameras fine

These latest changes have again triggered the interest of drivers about what can and cannot be done with the mobile phone and, of course, the fines for its use. Among the latest issues in the public debate of the social media that of the “new 225 radars that the DGT has active to monitor the use of mobile phones” has emerged.

The truth is that these supposed radars are neither radars nor new. Are 216 cameras distributed throughout the national territory that since its launch in 2017 sanction for the use of mobile phones or not wearing a seat belt. In fact, five years ago 225 cameras were installed, but the DGT confirms that over the years this number has decreased to the current 216 cameras.

Security Belt Cameras

During the presentation of these cameras five years ago, the DGT explained that the captured images are sent to the Automated Complaints Treatment Center. There, a software analyzes the images and filters those images that are likely to lead to a sanction. The latter are manually reviewed to verify that there are no errors and proceed to the processing of the complaint if applicable.

The DGT is not fining for using the mobile at gas stations. And much less because it causes outrage

It is mandatory that for the complaint is valid the license plate number, the date and time the infraction was taken and the driver can be read correctly using, or holding, the mobile phone.
