The television rights from the 2022-2023 LaLiga football season have given a lot to talk about. Theoretically, Telefónica and DAZN were going to distribute the match broadcasts over the next five years, but now there is talk of an agreement between both to be able to offer all of them.

As indicated in The ConfidentialTelefónica is finalizing the details of an agreement by which would pay DAZN 1.4 billion euros throughout the next five seasons. That would allow it to broadcast all the matches and thus maintain its main hook for Movistar+ clients.

The objective, to avoid the bleeding of subscribers

Rumors of a possible deal are not new: when the licensing was announced there was much discussion about how clients could access all matches of each day of LaLiga for the next few years.

The entry of DAZN – which is raising prices – in the field of football television rights was remarkable, but it was even more so the good relationship between the two: Telefónica has already transferred the emission rights of Formula 1 to DAZN until 2023 in order to be able to integrate all the contents of that platform in Movistar + (MotoGP, the Copa del Rey, the Premier…) in exchange.

Now that alliance could go further according to sources close to the new negotiations. If this agreement is confirmed, Telefónica would pay a maximum of 280 million euros per season for the next five, although the price would vary depending on audiences or matches that will be exchanged.

In this way, Telefónica will be able to broadcast the five games of each day that were reserved for DAZN, but the latter will also have the five from Telefónica, which you can, for example, resell to Orange. The fact that the operator ends up paying the OTT may be shocking, but it is the latter that, of course, most needs to have all that offer to try to reduce the drain of subscribers who are leaving the platform.

As they point out in the newspaper, with this agreement Telefónica I would manage to save money to give all the football. In total, the operator would invest some 800 million per season with all the games, when LaLiga estimated before the auction that the price would be 980 million euros. The current seasons were costing him even more expensive, 1,030 million euros.
