Among the many instruments on the Perseverance rover are a microphone that has allowed a team of researchers not only to hear for the first time what is heard on Mars, but also to do something curious: measure the speed at which sound is transmitted there.

One study reveals that sound travels there at about 240 m/s, but researchers have discovered that different frequencies of sound travel at different speeds. What does that mean? Well, if we could just have a chat on Mars, the result would probably be a disaster.

Scientist Baptiste Chide led a team made up of researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory and other centers such as the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao or INTA in Madrid. In his presentation (PDF) explained how they had studied the sound that Perseverance captures on Mars.

To achieve this, they measured the time it took for the sound of laser beams emitted from Perseverance to return to the rover’s microphone. The laser was used to vaporize nearby rocks and study its composition, and by analyzing those times they found out the speed of sound on Mars.

That speed is about 240 m/s, slightly slower than the speed of sound on Earth, where it travels at 343 m/s (in air and at 20 ºC). The curious thing is that this speed was not uniform: different sound frequencies travel at different speeds.

Thus, the speed increases by approximately 10 m/s with frequencies above 400 Hz. According to these data, communication on Mars would be extremely difficult on this planetbecause different parts of a talk would reach listeners at different times, leading to significant confusion.

The team was also able to measure the temperature on the surface of Mars around the rover because sound travels at different speeds depending on temperature. The idea now is to continue studying those sounds and analyze the fluctuations during the winter months and when sandstorms affect Perseverance.
