Sony buys Bungie: the developer of 'Destiny' moves to PlayStation and the acquisition war rages

But now the relationship tightens: The Canadian studio becomes part of Playstation Studios, in an announcement that although it does not have the magnitude of the purchases of Bethesda or Activision that Xbox has recently made public, it does reveal a strategy by Playstation. In fact, it was not too long ago when the Japanese company announced that it had acquired Bungie. It was the latest and most striking acquisition in a long list of companies that have entered Playstation Studios, such as Guerrilla Games, Naughty Dog, Media Molecule or, more recently, Bluepoint Studios and Housemarque.

A step towards multiplayer

If both recently acquired companies, Bungie and Haven, have something in common, it is their firm commitment to multiplayer. Bungie has years of experience and Haven is delivered to a completely AAA based on multiplayer mechanics The only thing that is known at the moment is that it will come to PS5 and PC. The purpose with this new IP, according to Raymond, is to “build a systemic and evolving world focused on freedom, excitement and gameplay that will keep players entertained and engaged for years to come.” In other words, they are preparing a game as a service with which they can keep players hooked for years, in the style of ‘Destiny 2’.

Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, has clarified that this commitment to multiplayer does not mean leaving behind one of Playstation’s standard-bearing styles: great narrative games with an emphasis on single-player campaigns, such as ‘Ghost of Tsushima’, ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘Horizon Forbidden West’. But he has also made it clear that “it is exciting to welcome a group of people who have a lot of experience in games as a service to the family.”
