so you can activate it (and say goodbye to the algorithm)

  • 14

You may not remember, but about six years ago the images and videos in the Instagram feed were displayed chronologically. However, this changed in 2016 when the algorithmically organized feed that accompanies us to this date was implemented. Now, the social network is regaining the ability to show us the publications in order of currency.

The return of the chronological feed to Instagram does not come alone. Meta, the parent company of the social network, has announced an additional way to choose what we want to see when opening the application. These are “Favorites”, which will allow us to select a certain number of friends and creators who are most interested in their content. Let’s take a closer look at how these features work.

“Following” and “Favorites” on Instagram

The feed in chronological order arrives under the name “Following”. You can activate this option from the mobile application. Simply tap on the Instagram icon in the upper left corner and choose “Following”. The app will then start showing you photos and images from your friends and creators in the order they were posted.

The “Favorites” option, meanwhile, can also be found by touching the Instagram logo. Upon entering you can add up to 50 people to quickly see (and in chronological order) their publications. These will also be given priority to appear first in the algorithmically sorted home feed, but will be marked with a star.

Instagram Feed Chronological

It should be noted that Instagram does not allow us to set the chronologically ordered feed as the default option or our favorite friends. This is for a simple reason: the algorithm makes users spend more time on the platform, which translates into more time to profile us and show ads, which translates into more revenue to support their business model.

Goal defends the use of the algorithm by ensuring that in 2016, “people missed 70% of the content of the feed, which involved almost half of the publications of their close contacts”. And that the default home feed sorts posts “based on what interests us most.” However, the social network has not been without controversy due to its methods for users to remain on the social network.

The new options for the feed, the chronological order and the favorites, will be available globally to all users of the Instagram apps for iOS and Android, explains the company on its blog. As the rollout is gradual, it may take a while to reach everyone. The browser version of the social network will continue to show the algorithmic feed as the only option.
