Smart #1, to conquer the city

If there is a model quintessential urban that’s Smart #1. In 2019 Smart announced that it would be the first vehicle manufacturer to sell exclusively electric vehicles. The step is logical. With only two models in its range and with a technology that should shine in the urban environment above any other. Now, the Smart #1 becomes the first model of the brand developed to be exclusively electric.

On the way Smart has chosen the SUV format. The fashionable body allows you to house larger batteries inside. Together with an improvement in the components, the Smart #1 expects to homologate between 420 and 440 kilometers in the WLTP urban cycle. Keep in mind that the Smart EQ Forfour, in the mixed cycle, barely marks 130 kilometers of available autonomy. Of course, the new SUV has to give up measured measures and jump up to 4.27 meters.

With an exterior image that is irremediably reminiscent of Mercedes, the interior also seeks a space of great perceived quality. Panoramic roof, large glass surfaces, 9.2-inch screen for the instrument panel and a floating screen of 12.8 inches, both with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels (Full HD). With it, the infotainment system is controlled, which is accompanied by a Beats sound system with an amplifier, 13 speakers and a subwoofer. A highly customizable interior environment is also promised, from the lights to the menus themselves.

But, in addition, the infotainment system will have an avatar developed through AI (artificial intelligence), which incorporates voice control and becomes a digital assistant within the user interface. Smart defines it as “a human-centric technology to connect people, places and experiences, both virtually and in real life”, to create an “interconnected ecosystem of the car, the app and the data cloud, all linked to a personal identification. The driver is expected to learn the driver’s expressions and behavior over time. It is also specified that 75% of the car’s ECU (control units) can be updated via OTA wirelessly.

On the move, drivers of the new Smart #1 will enjoy matrix lights and, in terms of ADAS safety aids, adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go function for traffic jams, lane keeping, blind spot control or automatic parking assistant. But it is in the mechanics and in the fast charge where Smart throws the rest.

The Smart #1 is a propulsion vehicle, with the 200 kW (272 hp) engine sending power to the rear axle, with a top speed limited to 180 km/h. Its 66 kWh battery can be recharged to a maximum power of 150 kWh in direct current and 22 kWh with alternating current. With these figures, you can go from 10 to 80% of the available charge in just 30 minutes, if you opt for the fastest option, or in three hours if you use the alternate charge.

As for its launch and prices, nothing official has been said. The information from Smart does indicate that the WLTP homologation is expected in the second half of 2022, so, at least, until then we do not expect to have any new news.
