First it was Vodafone, then Orange and today, finally, it has been Telefónica which has activated 5G in the 700 MHz band. The objective, ensure from the companyis to reach 1,400 municipalities by the end of the year and close 2023 with 2,400 populations.

Telefónica has been installing 700 MHz 5G nodes since June 2021 to turn them on upon receiving authorization from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation. These stations, already installed, will serve 700 towns throughout Spain and in the mobile world congresswhich will be “Telefónica’s first event with commercial coverage of 700 MHz”.

More coverage for the Spanish territory

In the auction of the 700 MHz band, Telefónica obtained a 2×10 MHz block which cost him 310.09 million euros. This is added to the 100 MHz that the operator already had in the 3.5 GHz band. In total, the company has invested 523 million euros in frequencies.

After concluding the auction, Telefónica assumed the commitment to offer 5G coverage to all municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants before June 2025. Before December 31, 2022, the operator must have reached 30% of the populations and before June 30, 2024, 70%.

5G in the 700 MHz band has a greater extension and more penetration indoors

However, and according to the operator, its coverage already reaches “to more than 80% of the populationto all provincial capitals and to both large towns and small towns with less than 3,000 inhabitants”. The goal, Telefónica points out, is to bring 5G at 700 MHz to 1,400 municipalities in 2022 and reach 2,400 municipalities in 2023.

Between the municipalities that already have 5G coverage in the 700 MHz band there are Almería, Alcudia, Ripoll, Rota, Madrigal de la Vera, Barbate, Azuqueca de Henares, Rota, Ocaña, Sada, Motril, Murcia, El Almendro, Andújar or Ezcaray, among others.

The switching on of the 700 MHz is “gradual”, points out Telefónica, since the Administration has only allowed activate 60 installations a week in these first weeks. The operators, not only Telefónica, also have to communicate the towns in which it is going to be activated to verify that there is no interference with DTT.
