Only Apple grows in a declining computer market during the last quarter

  • 17

The IDC market consultancy publishes its worldwide computer sales report every quarter. The last trimester the one from June to September 2022 is exceptionally good for Apple and bad for the rest of the manufacturers. The Cupertino company increased its unit sales by 40% from one year to the next, while those of the rest fell between 15% and 30% in a trimester to forget.

These reports, in public communications, only contemplate the top 5, encompassing the rest in a generic ‘Others’. The four that accompany Apple are Lenovo and HP, which lead the market in terms of units sold; followed by Dell, Apple itself and Asus.

nuanced euphoria

Although Apple’s growth is more than remarkable, especially when compared to an industry that has contracted 15% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, there are some nuances to consider that soften Apple’s euphoria.

For one thing, the data compares to the period June-September 2021. That was the last quarter before the arrival of the highly anticipated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with Apple Silicon, the first of those sizes in the transition from Intel. Quite possibly, the wait for these teams slowed down purchases, which accumulated more than usual as of October.

On the other hand, the current period includes the first months since the MacBook Air M2 went on sale, another computer whose potential buyers were waiting, after a year and a half with its predecessor on the market, which, unlike the M2, retained the previous design language. You also have to consider that this M2 came at a much less friendly price than the M1.

The MacBook Air M1 has disappointed me. So I bought another MacBook Air M1

Even so, this increase contrasts a lot with the pace of the rest of the manufacturers from one year to the next. So much so that Apple, which was barely a million units above its rival, Asus; now it almost doubles and it is less than two million away from assaulting the third position that Dell continues to occupy.

The IDC report also reveals that average sales prices have increased for five quarters in a row, quite possibly because of the chip shortage that has plagued the industry until recently. When it comes to prioritizing models to put on the market, manufacturers have made sure that the most expensive configurations have greater availability, something that would have pushed more than one buyer to opt for them so as not to wait too long.

The result, an average sale price of $910 at the beginning of 2022, an unprecedented value since 2004. This data clashes with the trend of increasingly cheaper computers since the beginning of the century.

The total sales of the industry in this last quarter, just over 74 million computers distributed. Far from the 87 million for the same period in 2021. 15% that has disappeared from one year to another despite the lonely growth of Apple.
