It’s impossible not to be a fan of modern science fiction and not have Alex Garland’s name etched on it, or even have it on a modest altar with its own room. The British has been confirmed throughout the century as a fantastic film visionaryas full of personality as talent to develop interesting concepts that delve into the human psyche and our functioning as a society.

Whether through artificial intelligence, zombies, creators in Silicon Valley, outer space, or a terrifying folk nightmare like his recent ‘Men,’ Garland always explores interesting insights into the human condition through genders. Also through the most explosive and comical action, as in his adaptation of ‘Dredd’, directed by Pete Travis -although the black legend assures that Garland acted as a director in the shadows during production- and that we can see in streaming via HBO Max.

Karl Urban, star of ‘The Boys’, this time plays a character that was already brought to the big screen in 1995 with Sylvester Stallone as the lead, with less interesting results. Judge Dredd moves in a futuristic dystopia where chaos and crime are unleashed and only a new order of security forces can keep them at bay, serving as judge, jury and executioner at the same time. One day he goes on a seemingly routine mission accompanied by a rookie judge, until they discover that a clan has set a trap for them to capture the judges.

A forgotten but highly entertaining piece of psychological horror comes to Netflix with a chilling Cillian Murphy

With a well-layered building as the only location -a frequent element in Garland’s works-, ‘Dredd’ displays powerful and highly stylized action sequences, without ever neglecting the satirical component of the original British comic. The good combination of these ingredients creates one of the most dazzling science fiction films of the last decade. Unfortunately, at the time it passed very quietly, which frustrated any possibility of a sequel that could have been really promising. But time has placed it as an absolute cult work for fans of the fantastic.
