OM System OM-1: Features, specifications, price

  • 4

Olympus sold its camera division to focus on medical equipment in mid-2020, and the Japanese company’s witness is taken by OM Digital Solutions, which has just announce its first professional mirrorless camerathe OM System OM-1. This is a nod to the original Olympus OM-1, which was released 50 years ago, but also a new Micro Four Thirds that it is based on computational photography and that it is postulated as the fastest camera on the market.

The end of Olympus cameras, the beginning of OM-Solutions

The new Olympus OM System OM-1 is the direct heir to the Olympus E-M1 Mark III. In fact many can confuse them, but if we look carefully, the new model has more rounded shapes. And the improvements are, on paper, numerous. To the point that it is worth changing the model. And this is something that can rarely be said when presenting an evolution of a model.

OM System OM-1

classic lines

Inside we find computational photography technology with a new stacked back-illuminated sensor that promises higher ISOS with less noise, a processor three times faster and a burst speed that silences many models from other brands… These are the advantages of a small sensor that is becoming more and more like the big ones…

It is the perfect example of how far the Micro Four Thirds system can go with the help of today’s technology. It seems that OM System will follow the innovative philosophy of Olympus, a brand that many of us cried when it apparently disappeared. But we are before the legend of the phoenix that rose from its ashes:

Having been spun off from Olympus Corporation in 2021, OM Digital Solutions was born to build on this 85-year heritage in imaging – technologies, products, services and brand heritage – and create an agile company that is able to harness all the potential of this business.

It is very striking that the Olympus name still appears on the front of the camera. It seems that it is a tribute paid to the 50 years of the mythical OM-1, one of the great Olympus cameras of chemical times.

The main novelties of the Om System OM-1

OM System is the only brand that follows the idea that mirrorless cameras have to be small. And this professional model fulfills it to the letter. barely reaches the 600g and its measurements are 138.8×91.6×72.7mm. It is one of the specifications that stands out the most and that has brought the general public to stores.

Inside the chamber we find a new Stacked BSI Live MOS sensor 20 megapixel camera and the latest image processor True Pic X which is three times faster than previous models. This means that it is the first camera with this type of sensor that exceeds 25,600 ISO, since it is capable of reaching 102,400 ISO.

This sensor improves the noise level by two steps and achieves one more step of dynamic range compared to the sensor of the previous model. No doubt thanks to the fact that we are facing a backlit and stacked sensor.

It is striking, as we read in the press release is: ‘Thanks to computational photography (advanced digital image processing), we have incorporated these functions in the camera at an early stage.’ OM System, as the heir to Olympus, is the first brand to openly recognize the use of computational photography for better results and easier operation.

a professional camera

The functions that it allows improve, in principle, the results of the previous models. So processes like high resolution shot without the need for a tripod Live NA to simulate the effects of neutral density filters; the live-composite to add only the brightest parts of a long exposure image, the focus stacking or the famous HDRthey work more accurately.

A very fast camera with professional features in the world of video

Another novelty, which makes it one of the fastest machines today, are the 50fps with autofocus tracking. And with the focus locked, or in manual, it achieves a whopping 120fps. has up to 1053 cross focus points controlled by the new version of the TruePic X processor.

To finish we have to point out the world of video. We will not have any stability problems thanks to the size of the sensor. With the OM System OM-1 you can record in 4K 60p, but if we want we can reach 240p in Full HD. And the most impressive, we can choose a 12-bit RAW output at 4:4:4.

And as a professional camera that it is, we can not its 5.76 MP electronic viewfinder at 120 fps, a sealed body that resists up to -10º and a new menu that tries to simplify the use of this camera. In this way, it reaches the quality of other models such as the Sony A7 RIV wave Canon EOS R3.

M.Zuiko 12-40 mmf2.8 II and 40-150 mm f4, the new OM System lenses

Together with the camera they have presented two new objectives of the professional series, The M.Zuiko Digital ED 12 40mm F2.8 PRO II (€999) (35mm: 24-80mm) and the M. Zuiko Digital ED 40 150mm F4.0 PRO (€899) (35mm: 80-300mm). Both are sealed against dust and splashes and have a fluorine coating that repels water, oil and dust.

Goodbye to Olympus cameras: it will sell that entire division to focus on medical equipment

It will be released in early March 2022 and will cost €2,199.
