At Spotify they are clear: everything that has something to do with the distribution of audio content must be part of the service. First it was music, then the commitment to podcasts and now, it seems, the audiobooks.

Daniel Eck, founder of Spotify, revealed in a meeting with investors how his company would take the step to offer audiobooks on the platform in a much more powerful way. It’s could make things difficult for Audiblethe Amazon alternative.

“A Massive Opportunity”

Spotify has already offered a small catalog of audiobooks for some time, but its movements in this regard are clear. A few months ago Spotify acquired Findawayan audiobook distribution company, and that showed its interest in a segment that had not touched much until now.

The deal hasn’t been closed yet, but for Ek audiobooks are “a massive opportunity”. According to various studies, the book business has a global value of about 140,000 million dollars, but audiobooks represent only 6 or 7% of that amount.

Even so, in some markets in which the format triumphs in a very special way, that quota it gets close to 50%. It therefore seems that Spotify effectively wants to have a strong presence in a market with considerable potential.

In Spotify they indicated that they wait relaunch this audiobook proposal throughout this 2022. Until now, the offer of audiobooks that was present on Spotify was somewhat limited and diffuse, as well as not being particularly accessible on the service.

It remains to be seen if this type of content will be part of a special pricing plan or they will be a separate offer, but of course it will be interesting to see how a platform that will undoubtedly rival Amazon’s proposal in this same segment ends up working out.
