mini-LED and QD-OLED take over the high-end

  • 2

The televisions that Samsung offers us this year are about to land in stores. During CES this brand gave us some clues about the innovations it has introduced in the new generation of devices Neo QLED with mini-LED backlightbut the most anticipated scoop by enthusiasts was the confirmation that its first TV with a QD-OLED panel was already in the oven.

Surprisingly, during the CES Samsung did not officially present its OLED television, but we knew with total certainty that it had it ready, and also that it would make it known soon, because the organizers of the event they awarded him a prize for its capacity for innovation. In any case, we already know in some detail specifications and prices of the most advanced televisions of this brand for 2022: the Neo QLED 8K and the expected model with an organic panel. And they look very good.

Neo QLED 8K (2022): mini-LED backlighting continues to mature

It was already the protagonist of Samsung’s high-end last year, and once again claims its share of attention. And is that the mini-LED backlight has a very deep impact in the image quality delivered by the LCD panel televisions that opt for it. And the three Neo QLED 8K models that this brand offers us this year, the QN900B, the QN800B and the QN700B, incorporate it.

How to calibrate your screen or monitor: an in-depth guide

Good news to whet your appetite: one of the features that the four televisions that we are going to talk about in this article have in common is the full implementation of the 2.1 standard. on all four HDMI connectors. Let’s cross our fingers that this is the general trend also beyond the high range. On the other hand, the three Neo QLED televisions that I mentioned in the previous paragraph share their commitment to a 10-bit VA LCD panel with 8K resolution.

If we stick to its image quality, the most relevant differences that we are interested in knowing between the three Neo QLED 8K televisions lie in the precision with which the backlight management system acts, the video processing and the maximum capacity of delivery of brightness. All three models rely on the same image processor, a Neural 8K chip specialized in the execution of artificial intelligence algorithms designed by Samsung itself.

In the field of HDR, Samsung maintains its commitment to HDR10 + content, but these televisions still do not process Dolby Vision metadata

This brand has not yet revealed the exact characteristics of the mini-LED backlight array that each television implements, but it seems reasonable to assume that the QN900B model incorporates the most precise local dimming technology for the backlighting, and the QN700B the most modest, although, yes, we must not overlook that the latter is also a television of high-end.

As far as the maximum brightness delivery capacity is concerned, the same thing happens, although, as we can see in the table, in this case Samsung does indicate that the QN900B model reaches peaks of 4000 nits in the 75-inch and 85-inch versions, compared to 2,000 nits for the QN800B and QN700B. Another important fact: in the field of HDR Samsung maintains its commitment to HDR10 + content, but these televisions still do not process Dolby Vision metadata.

Another area in which these televisions offer us different benefits is the sound section. All three process Dolby Atmos soundtracks, but their speaker setup is different. The QN900B incorporates 6.2.4 channels and a 90-watt amplification electronics; the QN800B has 4.2.2 channels and 70 watts; and, finally, the QN700B offers us 4.2 channels and 60 watts.

Only the QN900B and QN800B implement the Wi-Fi 6 standard; the QN700B has Wi-Fi 5

Another relevant difference that also determines the sound performance of these televisions is the way in which each of them implements OTS technology (Object Tracking Sound). This innovation aims to recreate a wide sound scene that allows us to accurately identify the spatial location of each sound source.

As we have just seen, the QN900B model has the most demanding speaker set, so, on paper, its implementation of OTS technology is also the most precise. One last point in the field of connectivity: the three models offer us Bluetooth 5.2but only the QN900B and QN800B implement the Wi-Fi 6 standard. The QN700B has Wi-Fi 5.

Samsung OLED QS95B: the first QD-OLED TV of this brand will arrive in April

Unlike TVs that use W-OLED panels (White OLED) made by LG, QD-OLED panels (Quantum Dot-OLED) produced by Samsung replace the RGB filter with a matrix of nanocrystals, or quantum dots, which is responsible for color reproduction. In theory removing the RGB filter should allow the panel to cast superior gloss delivery capability both when measuring the mean value and the peaks.

And, in addition, the nanocrystals should be able to reproduce a color space noticeably wider than the RGB color filter, but we will not know for sure what features this new Samsung technology offers us until we have the opportunity to thoroughly test this television (or the Sony Master Series A95K, which uses this same technology). ).

The new QS95B OLED television of this brand will be available in 55 and 65 inchesincorporates the same Neural 4K image processor with artificial intelligence that we can find in some of the Neo QLED televisions, and, as expected, its operating system is Tizen OS, the same that Samsung incorporates in most of its televisions.

The OLED QS95B model processes HDR10 +, HDR10 and HLG content, but not Dolby Vision

Like the Neo QLED televisions we have just investigated, the OLED QS95B model processes HDR10 +, HDR10 and HLG content, but not Dolby Vision. And when it comes to sound, it incorporates Object Tracking Sound, Q-Symphony and Dolby Atmos audio processing technologies.

Samsung Spain has not yet revealed its price, but the US subsidiary of this company has anticipated that the 55-inch model will cost $2,400 (approximately 2,156 euros), and the version with a 65-inch panel will be priced at $3,500 (3144 euros approximately).
