Microsoft is testing ads in Windows 11 Explorer (only internally at the moment)

Microsoft has “escaped” an experimental feature of Windows 11. The leak has not gone unnoticed and has caused some stir on social media. Is about ads in file explorer of the system to promote some of their own products.

The aforementioned Windows 11 feature was discovered by a member of the Insider program known as Florian B on Twitter. The user shared a screenshot of the browser with a notification inviting them to use Microsoft Editor.

Browser ads, a bad idea

“Write confidently in documents, email, and the web with advanced typing suggestions from Microsoft Editor,” read the text displayed below the system file explorer’s address bar, and concluded with the “See More” button.

To differentiate itself from the rest of the system elements, the ad box was displayed on a darker background, with a warning icon and a close button. However, the possible presence of this advertising space was shocking to many people.

After the protests of some users in the networks, and in reply to TheVerge, Microsoft came out to clarify the situation. “It was an experimental banner that was not intended to be published externally and it was disabled,” said Brandon LeBlanc, Program Manager for Windows.

How to customize Windows 11 to the fullest without installing anything

Redmond claims that the ads in the browser were being diverted to internal testing and that it was a bug that some members of the Windows Insider Program could see them in the most recent build (22572) of the development channel.

So we wonder: will we have ads in the file explorer in Windows 11? For now, Microsoft has removed this feature from the trial versions. However, according to one statement provided to The Verge, the company does not rule out implementing ads in the file explorer in the future.

The truth is that this is not the first time that those from Redmond have made this type of movement. In 2016, the company introduced the file explorer in Windows 10 a huge ad inviting users to download OneDrive. Previously it has also done the same in different parts of the system to promote Edge.
