Meta and Google are cutting staff by resorting to the fashionable trend: “silent layoffs”

  • 7

The economic climate has long called for cost cuts in companies, and several big technology companies have long declared that they would slow down hiring. Turns out it’s not just that: according to The Wall Street Journal now they are cutting templates. Or what is the same: they are laying off people, although they prefer not to speak too clearly about it.

Goodbye fat cows. In recent times things are not going well for the workers of large technology companies. amazon sent 100,000 employees to the streets during the summer, and before that on Netflix or Twitter, massive staff layoffs were also seen. After the fat cows it was seen that the templates were oversized, and little by little they are all readjusting that resource.

Target Cuts. The company, which is having a particularly bad time with its change of focus, had already hinted at future changes in its structure, but now those intentions are more forceful. According to the WSJ, in Meta they intend to cut expenses by “at least 10% in the coming months, in part through staff reductions.”

silent layoffs. Zuckerberg’s company “has begun quietly laying off a significant number of employees.” They are reorganizing departments and offering those affected agreements to request other functions in the company. Before the summer the company had 83,553 employees, 32% more than the previous year at that time.

Forced restructurings. The practice is already known in the company: employees whose positions are eliminated are fired if they have not found a new job in a month. With that, experts say, they achieve cuts and prevent massive layoffs, but things will go further according to internal company sources. No data has been given on the number of affected employees.

When work flexibility discourages employees: nobody wants to continue working at ten at night

Google moves file (and template). In Alphabet and Google they are also taking action on the matter, and in fact Sundar Pichai also made statements last August and spoke of how the company should “think about how to minimize distractions and raise the bar both in terms of productivity and in excellence in our products”.

Following in the footsteps of Meta. According to the WSJ, Google is also forcing some employees to move divisions and positions if they want to stay with the company. Among those affected are half of the 100 employees of its incubator, the so-called Area 120, and they have been given 90 days to achieve it. The company had 174,014 employees at the end of the second quarter of 2022, 20.8% more than at the same time in 2021.
