From Stuttagart to Silverstone on a 1,202 kilometer route. This is what the Mercedes Vision EQXX has managed to do, a prototype of the German firm that anticipates the technologies to be applied in its street vehicles. It is the same distance that separates Cádiz from Girona.

The first test on roads open to traffic already left very good feelings. Then the 1,000 kilometers were exceeded. But, in addition, the vehicle kept 15% of its battery untouched. What is really attractive about these Mercedes tests are the conditions used during their exams. The brand ensures that on all occasions it has circulated at the speed of traffic and at the maximum speed allowed when possible. This means that between Stuttgart and Silverstone it was circulated “at highway speeds”, according to Mercedes.

In fact, the data shows that the Mercedes Vision EQXX has not gone for a walk. His average speed during the journey was 83 km/h. If on its first trip to the south of France it was put to the test under the coldest conditions, this time its behavior with warm temperatures of more than 30 degrees has been examined. Mercedes ensures that during the 14 hours and 30 minutes of travel, the air conditioning was used for a little over eight hours.


The high thermal efficiency of the prototype stands out from the brand. They claim that a large part of their success consists in generating residual heat with their electric motors and that the distribution of air and the cooling of the car helps to extend the autonomy of their batteries over 1,000 kilometers, even with the air conditioning working regularly.

The consumption this time has been 8.3 kW/100 km for the 8.7 kW/100 km of the previous occasion. These are really ridiculous figures. A Tesla Model 3 or a BMW i4, two of the most efficient models of the moment, among other things because of their own bodywork, consume 14.9 kW/100 km and 16.1 kW/100 km in real conditions, according to Bloomberg.

In addition to thermal management, aerodynamics is a fundamental part of the electric car to reduce consumption. For example, in our test of the BMW iX we collected an average of 25.1 kW/100 km in an examination of almost 600 kilometers.
