Samsung has announced that it will sell original spare parts, repair tools and instruction manuals so that users can repair their devices without going to a store. The company’s right-to-repair move comes after Apple announced its new “Self-Repair” service and Microsoft a similar proposal for its Surface devices.

The new repair program from Samsung is brought to life through a partnership with iFixit, a company pioneering the consumer repair movement. The Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S21 family of smartphones, and the Galaxy Tab S7+ tablet will be the first devices to benefit from the repair program, but interestingly Galaxy S22 series will not be included.

Repair it yourself, but in the United States

Starting this summer in the United States, Samsung will offer users some of the most frequently requested replacement parts in stores. Is about screens, rear glass and charging ports. The company says it plans to expand the scope of the repair program to more products from its broad portfolio in the future, but does not specify which ones.

The opening of many companies to facilitate the repair of their devices could be part of the increasingly strict legislation on repairability. In the United States, FTC announced cracking down on practices that make it difficult for users to repair and Europe passed the “right to repair” that seeks to reduce the environmental impact of devices.

Microsoft and Dell want to make laptops more repairable, and that's good news for the entire industry.

Will Samsung’s repair program cover other devices beyond smartphones? Will it leave the borders of the United States? We do not know. Details are scarce at the moment, but the company promises to provide more information in the summer. As an example, one of Samsung’s competitors, Apple, assured that throughout 2022 it would expand its “Self-Repair” program, but it is still limited to the US.
