its first models are already circulating in Madrid

Just a few weeks ago we took the controls of the Mobilize Limo, the exclusively electric proposal that Cabify and Renault have launched in Madrid. In a similar move, Cabify adds two hydrogen vehiclesafter reaching an agreement with Toyota and Enagás.

The announcement comes after a three-way agreement between Cabify, Toyota and Enagas. The first of them will use two Toyota Mirai in its Vector fleet and they can be booked through Cabify ECO, a space that, at the moment, is reserved exclusively for companies.

For the time being, there will be two Toyota Mirai available on the streets of Madrid, but the agreement contemplates the assignment through renting of a total of 14 units of this model. After four years, the vehicles will return to Toyota, which will have to decide what to do with them.

For its part, Enagás will offer its hydrogen generator on Avenida de Manoteras to recharge the VTC’s hydrogen tanks. This recharge space is the only public point in Spain that works with a pressure of 700 bars, which allows a autonomy of 650 kilometers in the case of the Toyota Mirai. At 300 bars, as the rest of the Spanish stations work, autonomy falls below half.

The hydrogen car in Spain

That Cabify can add up to 14 fuel cell cars to its Vector fleet goes beyond the anecdote. It must be taken into account that the support for this type of vehicle is so poor in our country that in Spain they are authentic unicorns with wheels.

In fact, in 2021 seven vehicles were registered who used this technology. In 2020 there were five. And it is that, in Spain, just five points distributed throughout the national territory have a hydro generator available. And some of them are private or you need permission to use them, like the one Toyota has in facilities near Madrid.

A large European network for the hydrogen car: this is the plan of 11 gas companies to connect more than 23,000 km of gas pipelines

To get a better idea, in Germany they already have a hundred spaces where you can recharge hydrogen. In France there are another fifty points, so the Stellantis Group is determined to enter these markets with its delivery and freight vehicles.

The great advantage of the fuel cell vehicle is that, in practice, it works by electricity and only expels water vapor through the exhaust pipe. The problem is the difficulty to transport it. The peculiarities of hydrogen (it is 14 times more volatile than air) make its infrastructure very expensive. In fact, during our visit to the Stellantis factory in Rüsselsheim we verified that its price is the same as that of diesel.
