inflation (official and unofficial)

If something was missing from the PlayStation 5 and its complicated commercial landing, due to pandemic shortages, it was a price rise like the one we just saw. Its official price in Spain has risen 50 euros both in the version without an optical reader and in the one that does include it. A move that Sony has justified with high global inflation rates and “adverse” trends in currencies.

The Xbox Series X and Series S, meanwhile, currently retain their original prices of 500 and 300 euros respectively; although with clearly lower global sales figures, one more generation, than those of Sony.

Official and unofficial inflation

It is not the first financial problem that PlayStation 5 users have to face. In the first place, it announced that AAA games would cost 80 euros, a figure that, although it is not so different from previous generations if we discount the effect of inflation, and also had remained static at 60 euros during PS3 and PS4, leaves the actual price more expensive than in any generation since the original PlayStation.

Prices like this have not been seen since the days of Atari Jaguar, Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo and company, when video games were (remember, in real terms) much more expensive than they are now.

At the time, with inflation almost nonexistent in several regions, Sony did not take advantage of it to justify the increase (despite the static prices in the previous two generations), but simply spoke of the high quality and realism that would “captivate” gamers as argument.

The rise in price of the console has come preceded by a sort of hidden rise, which has occurred due to two factors:

  • Chronic shortage that degenerated into platforms and second-hand stores selling it for 700 or 800 euros as the only way for those who wanted to buy it for many months.
  • Stores that could not sell it new at that price but did take the opportunity to abuse the bundlespackaging the console with games as the only purchase option in many cases, again leaving prices of 700 or 800 euros for those who wanted to buy it in an official establishment.

Special mention for Best Buy, which decided to reserve it only for members of its special program, which costs 200 euros a year.

This is the monitor that I would buy to play with PS5 or Xbox Series X: Xataka's recommendations

This movement does not come alone: Apple is no longer raising the price of the MacBook Air by 35% from one generation to another, but a few months earlier it applied another increase, this time stealthily, to MacBook Air M1. 90 euros more overnight without any hardware improvement. A decision resulting from inflation and currency exchange (the euro is already below the dollar) like the one Sony has had to face with the PS5. If we already anticipated that we would have to arm ourselves with patience for a price drop for PS5 or Xbox Series, inflation may be blowing up this hope.

Only that in the case of the console, this rise after almost two years on the market, on the one hand is counterintuitive for those who remain oblivious to economic news (the usual thing was to find cheaper discounts or variations of the console) and on the other hand adds to a list of financial penances that the PS5 player has had to go through fruit, paradoxically, of events beyond the control of Sony. For you inflationists.
