“People agree to requests for help for many reasons: because they empathize with the situation, because they want to seem like a good person, because they expect reciprocity in the future or because they want to be well seen in the group. The strength of each of those factors is likely to depend on how the request is made, and can be dimmed depending on the channels being used”, states the document.

Thus, the authors explain that it is much less awkward to say no when one does not have to do it in front of the applicant, and even less so when the request is made in writing. Another study that cites this research ensures that the presence of a human face encourages prosocial behavior and trust, facilitates the interpretation of emotions and increases the willingness to help.
