How much does a long trip cost in Spain with an electric car. We take out the calculator, in time and money

Most of the time when we talk about traveling by electric car, we focus on charging times and the availability of plugs. But how much money we spend on a long trip?


Unlike in a combustion vehicle, where it is possible to save a little money by checking the cheapest gas stations nearby, prices vary a lot if we talk about an electric car. Of course, what we will not pay with money we will pay with time.

For example, down the road in a long distance trip we can find fast chargers of 150 kW (and up to 350 kW if our car supports such high loads) but we can also take the opportunity to leave the car charging at slower points while we eat or do a bit of tourism, which will lead to a lower recharge price.

Therefore, what prices do we handle when we want to go on a trip? That will depend on our planning and the waiting times that we are willing to assume. These are our calculations.

How much would a Bilbao-Cádiz cost us?

Generally, when we talk about electric cars, recharging and batteries, we tend to focus on how to charge our electric car, the power it supports, how it manages filling your batteries or the possibilities offered from the car’s own browser.

But if we want to get out the calculator and know how much money a long trip in an electric car would cost us, there are two factors to take into account: autonomy and the points chosen. The number of kilometers available in the car is more essential here than in a combustion vehicle, since the recharges are much longer. And the chargers too, well, in addition to being significantly cheaper to load the car at slower points, we will also save a lot of money on the trip.

To make our calculations, we have taken three cars of different prices, autonomies and concepts that have passed through our hands. Taking into account the data we have collected during our tests, instead of the controversial WLTP consumption. The chosen vehicles are: Aiways U5, BMW i4 and Mercedes EQS.

The journey will be Cadiz-Bilbao, a trip to cross the Peninsula from coast to coast. Assuming that we leave with full batteries and that we have a charging point available at the origin. With a combustion car, Google Maps ensures that the fastest route is 9 hours and one minute, to cover a distance of 977 km, but this changes if we talk about an electric car, tied to a recharging network that is less extensive than what we would like

I have been traveling by electric car for months.  These are my tips for the uninitiated

To do our calculations, we have used the application EV Navigation, where many factors can be applied, such as the state of the load before leaving or the expected load at the destination point. We have adjusted the available autonomy with our own data and we have also set a load limit of 80%, because from here the load power tends to plummet. But, in addition, parameters such as the number of passengers, the type of driving performed (ECO, Normal or Sport) and even the tire pressure can be adjusted.

The prices We have confirmed them with electromaps, which has more up-to-date data. In case of variable prices, we have always chosen the most expensive option.

Traveling with an Airways U5

During our test of the Aiways U5, the car recorded consumption of 26.4 kWh/100 km on express roads. Its battery is 63 kWh, which gives us about 350 kilometers of available autonomy.

In this case, its maximum load power allowed is 90 kWh, so we will have to make a maximum of five stops depending on the application, which will lengthen the trip by a few 3 hours and 45 minutes, assuming that all plugs charge correctly and at the desired power. All plugs will be 50 kW CCS2, except one. The exception will be a 150 kW CCS2 plug, but it will not be able to deliver all its power.

Traveling with a BMW i4

In our case, we have had the opportunity to test a BMW i4 eDrive40, one of the most economical versions of the moment. In our test, it gave us a consumption of 15.1 kWh/100 km, which we are going to raise to a conservative 17 kWh/100 km, since during our data collection, many kilometers of secondary roads were traveled.

With a useful 80 kWh battery, our calculations point to an available range of about 470 kilometers. In addition, it benefits from a charging power of up to 200 kW, which leaves us with a route that will lengthen 2 hours and 20 minutes. We will have a large number of 150 kW CCS2 plugs but 12 of them are accumulated in a Tesla station open to all vehicles.

Traveling with a Mercedes EQS

We have recently tested a Mercedes EQS in its top of the range version. A large electric saloon with a huge 107.8 kWh battery but which was penalized by a consumption of 26.1 kWh/100 km, which leaves its autonomy in about 413 available kilometers.

In this case, the German saloon also admits powers of up to 200 kW. Therefore, to the already planned route we will have to add 3 hours and 45 minutes. Along the way, we will have up to 35 CCS2 plugs available, with powers of 250 kW, 150 kW, 100 kW and 50 kW.

Conclusions

Making a trip between Bilbao and Cadiz depends to a large extent on the car we have bought, its autonomy and the charging power it supports. Selecting the variables to make the trip as fast as possible, like prioritize loads to 80%adds many arrests.

In the case of the BMW i4 we are lengthening the trip by 2 hours and 20 minutes, something that can certainly be reasonable on a journey of more than 1,000 kilometers. But if we look at the data provided by the Mercedes EQS and the Aiways U5, we increase this time to almost four hours more to the trip.

The average cost, between three such disparate cars, has been 171.35 euros

We even check how the Aiways U5 brings out the colors to the Mercedes. Although its autonomy is less and its charging power too, it achieves very similar results in time, since it saves a stop along the way. In part, this is because the app prioritizes another ride with fewer miles because it ignores many fast chargers.

Also, keep in mind that we have selected a minimum percentage of 10% of the battery in the destination and a 15% reserve for the walk. This forces the Mercedes to stop earlier, which, however, theoretically has more kilometers inside. Perhaps, with a more leisurely driving, the results would be better for the great German sedan.

Spain is entrusting the takeoff of the electric car to purchase aid.  It will not work

We also see how the price skyrockets when we prioritize fast charging. In the case of the Mercedes EQS, it is the most obvious, but the Aiways U5 shows that, if we are willing to pay in time, our trip can be much cheaper.

According to the calculations collected, on average, a Bilbao-Cádiz trip in the shortest possible time, prioritizing charging points equal to or greater than 50 kW, has a cost of 171.35 euros. With the current price of gasoline and diesel, that would mean filling almost two 50-liter tanks of both fuels, the average volume that is usually taken as a reference for calculations with combustion vehicles.
