Honor Magic V, opinions after first contact. Video and photos.

Honor has made a notable leap in quality this year. An example is the new Honor Magic V, the first folding to incorporate the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and a firm candidate to become the best foldable on the market, rivaling models like the Galaxy Z Fold3 or the OPPO Find N.

As we already did with the Honor Magic4 Pro, we took advantage of the Mobile World Congress 2022 to be able to test the new Honor folding. A mobile that for the moment will not arrive in Spain and has a considerable price, but that offers a result at the height of the best.

Which folding phone to buy in 2022: buying guide with models for sale in Spain and comparison

Slim and very well built, if a bit heavy

Honor Magic Folded

The Honor Magic V is comfortable to use, except for perhaps being in front of one of the heaviest foldables. These 288 grams are compensated with reduced frames and a hinge that leaves no space when closed.

Outside we have a 6.45″ OLED panel with 120 Hz, 1,000 nits of brightness, and a stretched 21:9 aspect ratio. If it weren’t for the thickness of the device, using the mobile with the external screen is not very different from using any mobile. The panel is of good quality, the brightness level is high and it offers very good sensations. An outdoor screen that many mobiles would like.

If we go inside, the news is good again. We have a generous OLED panel of 7.9 inches with 90 Hz and compatible with HDR10 +. The panel occupies practically the entire interior, with a ratio of 88.6%practically identical to the one we have in the latest Samsung folding.

Honor Magic V Screen

The screen has IMAX Enhanced certified and it is also up to par. As is usual in folding phones, when you open and close the device you can see the central strip, but once it is opened it is unnoticeable if we look at the mobile from the front. Perhaps it is not the best screen of this style that we have seen, but it does fit perfectly within the high range.

Honor Thickness

At the construction level, the Honor Magic V comes with an aluminum finish and has a completely smooth thick side stripe. We have a mobile phone that is 14.3 millimeters thick when folded, a lot for a smartphone but pretty thin for a foldable.

It is perhaps a bit heavy, but the Honor Magic V makes up for it with a hinge that does not leave a gap when closed and with good quality screens that leave little margin at the edges.

The trick is found in the hinge. Honor adds a different hinge than its rivals, with a small protruding wheel when the mobile is completely open, but it allows you to stay completely closed and without spaces. This hinge also makes the fold shallower so the stress doesn’t go as much into the panel. Aesthetically perhaps it is not so attractive, but it was quite practical.

If with the Mi MIX Fold we detected that the hinge was somewhat loose, with the Honor Magic V it seemed to us perhaps the opposite. That the folding one was quite solid and that the opening has some resistance. Honor explains that this hinge supports up to 200,000 fold and unfold cycles, the equivalent of folding it about 50 times a day for 10 years.

Add side fingerprint reader, we don’t support stylus and body does not offer IP68 certification of water resistance. Nor does it add the new Gorilla Glass Victus to protect the glass. Compared to the latest flagships, the Honor Magic V has a margin for improvement in design, but both due to the optimization of the space and the good functioning of the hinge, we believe that we are facing a mobile that on a day-to-day basis looks like will give good results.

Honor Magic4 Pro, first impressions: Honor asks for a place in the league of mobile phones over 1,000 euros

A mobile with the latest components, but without Google services

The Honor Magic V is a beast. In addition to being the first folding with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, comes with 12 GB of RAM and a storage of up to 512 GB. On first impressions it is difficult to comment on performance. Logically, all applications opened instantly and we did not experience any strange behavior.

It is interesting to note that the Honor Magic V did not come with Google services, unlike the Honor Magic4 Pro, which did have them in full. This difference is due to this Honor Magic V for the moment will not arrive in Spain.

Unlike the Honor Magic4 Pro, the Honor folding will not arrive in Spain and therefore does not bring Google services.

For the battery it has 4,750 mAh and 66W fast charge which promises to complete 50% of the battery in 15 minutes. Unlike its flagship, we do not have wireless charging.

In the photographic section we have a 50 megapixel triple camera with an aperture lens f / 1.9, a wide angle with 122 degrees and a third sensor with the same 50 hyperspectral megapixels. It does not have a specialized telephoto sensor.

Interesting is the decision to incorporate double front camera, one inside and one outside. Perhaps it is not ideal, but this way we can take photos both with the mobile closed and unfolded.

A folding with many arguments to justify its price

The Honor Magic V is a folding flagship. Not only because of the first-rate features, but also because it shows that the company has taken care of the details. We don’t think it’s just a product to show the level of innovation, the Honor Magic V is prepared to go out on the market and aspire to become a benchmark inside the folding mobiles.

The first folding of Honor points to the top. Its price is high and the company has no plans to launch it in Spain, but both because of the quality of its screens and because of its convincing design, we believe that we are facing one of the roundest foldables that we have seen so far.

However, it seems that Honor wants to play for time. He is the first with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Its features are top notch. But so is its price in China. We go to 9,999 yuan, about 1,400 euros at direct exchange, which could be more if it reaches Spain.

Asking Honor, the company explains that at the moment they are not going to launch it and that is why it does not come with Google applications and services. We do not know what will happen with this Honor Magic V, but I would not rule out that for the second half of the year it ends up being presented in more markets. We will see then what the competition has presented.
