HBO Max’s new apocalyptic miniseries throws us into a civil war in the US

Just a week after its premiere on March 17, the first trailer for the new HBO Max series about the end of the world arrives. This time we do not have a plague, a pandemic or a zombie invasion as a trigger for the disaster, but a much closer event: a civil war that pits two factions of the population in the United States against each other. Rosario Dawson stars in this four-episode limited series based on the prestigious comic book by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli for DC’s Vertigo imprint.

In the original comic, he was a journalist who entered the demilitarized zone (the DMZ of the title) of Manhattan, devastated after the Second American Civil War. Although it should be a quiet place, it transpires the conflict that has ended the city: supporters of the government facing the secessionist Free States of America.

In search of the lost son

The series proposes some changes to that argument. Dawson is a doctor who has been separated from her son in the first riots, and enters the DMZ to locate it. There she will meet the head of one of the gangs that control the area while he tirelessly searches for his son, in an adventure that is both dystopian with clear messages about the futility of war and emotional drama about a woman in tireless search for her family.

HBO Max premieres in March 2022: all the new series, movies and documentaries

The showrunner of the series is Roberto Patino, who has participated in the production of hits such as ‘Westworld’ or ‘Sons of Anarchy’. The episodes are directed by two very interesting names: Ava DuVernay (‘Selma’, ‘A Wrinkle in Time’) and Ernest Dickerson, a veteran director of deeply racialized films and countless episodes of series as diverse as ‘Raised by Wolves’ , ‘House of Cards’, ‘The Man in the High Castle’, ‘The Walking Dead’ or ‘The Dome’, among others.
