Google pampers (finally) tablets and foldables with Android

More than ten years have passed since the launch of Android Honeycomb, the version of Android for tablets that, unfortunately, did not become very widespread. Since then, optimization of Android for tablets has fallen into the hands of manufacturers, but that is close to changing thanks to Android 12L.

At the end of last year, Google announced the launch of this new version of Android 12 optimized for large-format devices, such as tablets or folding devices. After some time in beta phase, Android 12L is already stable and begins its journey, first in the Google Pixel and, later, in other devices.

An interface adapted to large formats

Interface

One of the keys to Android 12L is that the interface has been optimized for large screens. In this way, the operating system is able to take advantage of the additional space offered by tablets to improve the display of the home screen, lock screen, notification curtain and settings, among other things.

In this sense, one of the juiciest novelties is the bottom taskbar. As if it were a PC desktop, we can have icons at the bottom and open the apps just by pressing them. In addition, we can open two apps in split screen by dragging one of the icons to the screen.

On the other hand, the interface has been divided into two columns on many of the system screens, such as the notification shade and quick settings, which will now be displayed at the same time. The same applies to the system settings, which now show us the list of settings on the left and on the right the options of the setting in question. If you have ever used iPadOS, surely the system is familiar to you.

The first Android 12L devices

According to Google, Android 12L will start arriving from now to Google Pixel 3a onwards together with the latest security patch (corresponding to March). It will appear as Android 12.1 and it brings some mobile news, like a new way to change wallpapers.

On the other hand, Android 12L will arrive at tablets and foldables from Samsung, Lenovo and Microsoft by the end of the year. One of the first updated devices will be the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro. Now the ball is in the court of the manufacturers, who will have to announce their update plans.
