Google Meet group video calls have a time limit again

With the pandemic, the confinement and the impossibility of seeing each other physically, there were not a few technology companies that opened their video call services to allow longer group meetings. One of them was Google, which removed the barriers in Google Meet. But That ended.

As Google announced in an email sent to users, starting this month “group meetings with three or more participants will once again be subject to the one-hour limit“. If we want to extend the time limit, the solution that Google offers us is simple: pay a subscription.

This change does not catch us by surprise. In July of last year, Google reflected this change on its support page, so it was about time to become effective. Starting this month, the only way we will have to continue using Google Meet with many participants and for a long time is to checkout.

What Google proposes to us is a Google One Premium personal plan, which includes WorkSpace Premium. This is worth 9.99 euros per month and includes longer video calls, live on YouTube, background noise cancellation and call recording in Meet, as well as 2 TB of storage for Google Photos, Drive and Gmail and a VPN for Android and iOS. Casually, Workspace Premium individual arrived in Spain just a few days ago.

WhatsApp allows unlimited video calls of up to 32 participants and Jitsi offers access to up to 100 participants and unlimited duration.

What could be the reason for this decision by Google? There is no completely certain answer, but the reality is that last month Alphabet, parent company of Google, declared net profits of 32,438 million dollars between January and June, which means 11% less profit compared to the same period of the previous year.
