Google joins the sanctions and leaves RT and other Russian media without millions of advertising revenue

The invasion of Ukraine continues to cause problems for Russia. Following mounting economic sanctions, which anticipate a historic crisis, Alphabet, the parent company of Google and YouTube, has announced which will prevent Russian government-backed media outlets, such as the international television network RT, from being able to earn revenue from displaying ads in their web pages, applications and videos.

In addition, these media will not be able to use Google’s advertising platform, one of the most important on the internet. This means they will lose the ability to increase their reach with ads displayed on the Mountain View company’s own services and applications, such as Google search and Gmail, as well as on millions of pages, videos and third-party applications.

Another pheno to Russian propaganda

Russia’s government-backed media landscape—and his sophisticated propaganda machine— is further complicated by the new restrictions. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced last Friday a measure similar to the one adopted by Alphabet. Banned Russian state media create advertising campaigns or generate income from advertisements using their platform. And this Monday he expanded his answer restricting access to RT and Sputnik across the EU.

In 1991 Ukraine had the third largest nuclear arsenal. She gave it up in exchange for Russia respecting her borders.

For her part, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, proposed last Friday to veto the broadcasts of Russia Today and Sputnik in community territory, arguing “toxic and harmful disinformation.” Although the aforementioned media continue to broadcast through YouTube, with Alphabet’s decision, the blow will come from the economic side, since its advertising revenue will be significantly reduced, in millions of dollars.

To get an idea, 26 YouTube channels supported by the Russian government generated between 7 and 32 million dollars from advertising between 2016 and 2018. The video platform has said in the past that government-backed channels are subject to the same ad revenue rules as other channels.

This has made it possible for YouTube channels with a pronounced growth, such as RT in Spanish, the earnings to grow considerably. Now that will be a thing of the past. With the latest measures, many Russian media will have to say goodbye to millions of dollars in advertising revenue.

TikTok leaves RT and Sputnik out of Europe

But there is still more. RT and Sputnik profiles on TikTok are no longer available in Europe. According Le Mondethe French representative of the Chinese social network revealed the measure during a meeting with the French secretary of state for technology, Cédric O.

RT profiles in French, English and Spanish are no longer visible from member countries to the European Union. However, users connecting from non-EU countries can continue to view RT content.

Update (02/28/2022 22:17): Added Meta’s decision to restrict access to RT and Sputnik throughout the EU.
