The Technical Inspection of Vehicles, better known as ITV, is the periodic examination that we have to pass on our vehicles to check if they have sufficient guarantees to circulate safely. A norm that in France does not apply to motorcycles and that they have managed to keep it that way.

Without ITV. Motorcycles in France do not pass, nor will they pass, the ITV. It is one of the most important differences in terms of circulation with the neighboring country. This exception, however, was in danger last year. In the summer of 2021, the Official Gazette of France published that the ITV would be mandatory for all motorcycles from 2023, which raised great rejection among bikers.

The rule to apply to motorcycles was the same as for vehicles: a review in the first four years and periodic reviews every two years once this period has passed. However, President Macron himself had to intervene shortly after the publication of the new rule. Finally, it is expected that on Friday, April 8, what was already announced will be confirmed: motorcycles in France will not have to pass the ITV.

In Spain. In our country, the deadlines to pass the ITV to motorcycles they are the same as those proposed in France: a review four years after first registration and every two years thereafter. Of course, in France it is mandatory to pass the ITV before transferring a vehicle, which does not happen in Spain.

Absenteeism. Although the ITV is compulsory in Spain, absenteeism figures they have been worrying about it for a long time. AECA-ITV puts at 54% the number of motorcycles and mopeds that annually do not comply with the obligation to attend the mandatory exams. A figure that, in the case of other vehicles, also worries. Before the coronavirus pandemic, 20% of light vehicles did not go to specialized centers and in 2021 this figure grew to 40%.

To consider. What should we monitor in case we have to pass the ITV to a motorcycle or moped? The RACE points out that it must be pay special attention to tire tread and the correct functioning of the lighting. It is estimated that around 45% of the failures recorded in these reviews are caused by tires in poor condition and light problems.

ITV 2022: why you don't have to worry about the OBD and emissions if you haven't tampered with your car

In addition, the mirrors, the exhaust pipes, the good condition of the brakes or the suspensions are checked. In the case of mopeds, it is also checked that they do not exceed 45 km/h, which are limited.

The latest changes. As was the case with other vehicles, motorcycles also have to face the OBD test. Since 2020, the most modern vehicles are connected to an error diagnosis system to check that their warnings have not been deleted shortly before facing the ITV examination. For this exam, it is necessary that the motorcycle has the Euro 4 regulation onwards (in force in these vehicles since 2017).
